Re: Question about Transport Canada recordkeeping

Turns out the record doesn't exist. TC got back to me and said that while submissions for licensing (flight test reports) do indicate the name of the FTU, TC does not extract and compile this information. Therefore, it would not be possible to generate the type of statistic I was seeking.

Re: Question about Transport Canada recordkeeping

A 47% failure rate in flight training isn't much to boast about, anyway. Instructors get put into special measures if their student failure rate is 30%. True but these rates aren't linked to a particular instruction. They are linked to the entire FTU. A 53% graduation rate is much more appealing fo...

Re: Question about Transport Canada recordkeeping

Did you send an email to the governing body about these shenanigans? They might throw that on the pile to look at but then is there any real legal issue here? For example, that "53%" might include other programs or maybe 53% that were still enrolled by the end passed. They wouldn't count dropouts i...

That's not a bad idea. I'll wait to see what my request to TC reveals before resorting to such measures.

Re: Question about Transport Canada recordkeeping

Ok great, thanks for all the input. Without naming anyone, essentially what I'm trying to do is validate some fishy graduation rates that were reported to the Ministry of Colleges & Universities. I attended a particular program and I recall that by the 3rd year, there were less than 40% of us remain...

Question about Transport Canada recordkeeping

Does anyone know whether Transport Canada keeps track of FTU's when granting licenses to new pilots? For example, when someone obtains a CPL or ATPL, is this intrinsically linked to the FTU the pilot attended? The reason I ask if because I'm sending a Freedom of Information request to Transport Cana...

Re: Examens CQFA

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

What is this "distance AGL" column...? It's odd to find this in a "VFR Weather Minima" table. Is this saying that, under all weather conditions, you mustn't fly below 500AGL within a control zone?

Is it just me or is it not possible to download the VNC/VTA legend in the FltPlan Go app?

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

Answered Does anyone have any recommendations about how to practice the skill of locating oneself on a VNC, aside from actually renting an airplane and doing it? The reason I ask is because I often have trouble when planning and executing a diversion since: - "yellow dot towns" tend to be indisting...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

Answered

Another one about taxiing in a crosswind... what do you do if the x-wind is NOT quartering but it's exactly 90 degrees to one side? Would that be a turn into wind, away from the wind, or just keep the ailerons flush with the wing...?

Re: Altimeter Setting Question

I'm honestly not sure what's in the bellow (I think you mean aneroid capsule). All I know is that it's a partial vacuum. Lol. Peter knows perfectly well what's in the aneroid capsule. As should every pilot from the aspiring PPL upwards. A bit of research for you to do ... Well FTGU states "these ca...

Re: Altimeter Setting Question

Quick question. What are the bellows filled with? Is it dry air? Nitrogen? Not sure if this is a legitimate question or if you're attempting to make fun of my original question.... at any rate, I don't think the "filling" affects its operation since all gases respond to pressure changes the same wa...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

Ok so then it's not the RPM that determines whether or not the engine may get damaged - it's the %power? A) RPM PRODUCES POWER So is it meaningless for the "normal operation" column to indicate 2100 - 2700 at 10 000ft since you wouldn't be able to achieve that RPM anyway? A publishing oversight, pe...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

For example, let's say you hear noise so you turn up the squelch to make the noise disappear. If that same noise were somehow to become louder, would it then make it into the headset? Or would it still be blocked since it's "noise"...? The squelch control on the radio shuts off the output when the ...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

Most radios don't distinguish valid signal (voice) from background noise other than by signal amplitude. The squelch is just a signal strength threshold, both on your radio and your intercom if it has adjustable squelch. If you put your microphone up to a vent the rushing air will break squelch on ...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

Does anyone know where the aileron type and flap type for a 172 would be published? The POH for the 172S does not contain this information. The 172S I train on has frise differential ailerons and single-slotted fowler flaps. I know this from word-of-mouth and observing the airframe of the aircraft ...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

ROC-A is not a radio station licence. (It's neither a licence not is it for a station.) There are no renewal fees. Oh I see... so in this context when they say "license" they are not referring to something that is held by an individual person... they are referring to a license that allows the stati...

Re: Altimeter Setting Question

As far as I understand it, turning the knob only turns the needle(s) in relation to the rest of the linkage. It doesn't change the pressure in the unit or put any additional pressure on the capsules - they react to absolute pressure and that is converted mechanically into the dial indication. On an...

Re: Mental dump of questions for PPL & CPL level

Answered When you turn up the "squelch" knob, you are raising the minimum threshold for a signal to be transmitted to your headset. What I'm wondering is this: Does squelch eliminate low amplitude (volume) signal? Or does it eliminate low clarity signal? For example, let's say you hear noise so you...
