Question: Class E --- Remotely advising aircraft
I was just wondering how an FSS "controls" traffic when there is no tower and nobody on site? I'm thinking of CYQF (Red Deer Regional). When flying into CYQF you are supposed to notify Red Deer Radio your intentions and they try to slip you in but I just wonder how they track where every aircraft is...

PAPI and aiming point
Most of my flying is at uncontrolled airports and sometimes I go land at airports with a PAPI but I generally do not use the PAPIs. I've been considering doing a night rating where I think you need the PAPIs to ensure you have a good glide slope as to not run into any obstacles. So I'm thinking I sh...

Joining the circuit at in a Class E control zone
Hi there! I've had my PPL for about a year now and most of the flying was in and out of uncontrolled aerodromes. Lately I decided to try a touch and go at a class E control zone --- Red Deer (CYQF). https://skyvector.com/airport/CYQF/Red-Deer-Regional-Airport I was wondering if I come in in from the...

Re: Foreflight
I think foreflight is fantastic. I would just hate to be in a situation where I grow a dependency on it then show up at the airport and perhaps forgetting the Bluetooth GPS! I think with Foreflight that it reduces my workload enough that I actually look out the window. The only times when ForeFlight...

Re: Independent FI or small school near Calgary?
Try Skywings in Okotoks. It only has C172s but their schedule seems pretty good and its at an uncontrolled airport.

Re: Instructor Fell Asleep
I was just reading the issues the original poster had written. It is cases like this which made me choose a school where it is not "too busy" and not too big. It is some kind of "herd mentality" or bandwagon effect that causes a lot of us to flock towards places that are already too busy while we ov...

Re: Planning an Aviation tour trip... Thoughts?
I'd hate to be in North Korea and get into any form of trouble. 1000HP might have a point --- also if you are even so much as travelling say into Canada or the USA that a North Korean stamp on your passport may cause problems or at least more questions at customs. If you have some euros hanging arou...

Re: Renting out your airplane
CapnCrunch mentioned you can rent out your airplane assuming your insurance company likes it and you are set up as a commercial operation. I wonder what is involved if you were to set up a one airplane rental business and how much insurance companies would charge you for having the most poorly skill...

Re: Supplementing Canadian Flight Training with US FTU
I had an idea like this too while going on vacation...not so much in the USA but various places in Canada. The way I see it is that you are supposed to be keeping current anyways after you get your PPL....so sneaking in a few hours before you get your PPL is like the same thing except the timing may...

Re: Need Advice
One thing I would consider is if your engineering qualifications are even accepted in Canada. The funny thing is our immigration system wants to attract foreign skills but it seems some professional organizations and employers do not accept those qualifications. I hear many of our cab drivers and ja...

Re: Just say NO to Aviation Degrees and Debt
I can see how it might add up to $200,000 per year if you calculate it with something called "opportunity cost" which is the money you would have made if you had a job. In other words to goto school you have to forgo maybe a $50,000 per yer job and pay maybe $40,000 in living expenses then you can s...

Re: Going back to flight school in Alberta
A buddy of mine tried to do his PPL at the flying club but they had like 30 ground school students and something like 10 C-172's and fewer instructors and ended up with each student getting like 1 flight per month. He said it was too busy (not just the traffic) but the instructors seemed to have a v...

Going back to flight school in Alberta
I started flight training at YYC several years ago but never finished my PPL and I'm now 48 and would like to go back either to YYC or Okotoks to finish it off. Back then the economy in Alberta was booming and the flying club was just way too busy and it was difficult to get any flight time in. YYC ...
