Re: Canadian helicopter industry debates major challenges it faces!

Anybody really think ICAO has it better figured out than Canada? I trained pilots from many different countries that already had a license. Zero difference to Canadian 100 hr. If anything the Canadian standard weeds out those without aptitude that will forever be a burden on their employer and the i...

Helicopter missing near Revelstoke

Search on for a helicopter traveling Calgary -Sicamous, presumed to have crashed east of Revelstoke. Had modeS, can't see it in Flightradar. Single ELT ping near Roger's Pass, manually activated? Hope it wasn't yet one more without sat-tracking. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/missin...

Re: Air Tindi Twin Otter Down

Herc dropped 2-3 sartech's on site, rescue crew from the mine also got there at about the same time on snowmobiles. Mine has fuel, lit 5000' strip, so I guess the Herc could have landed there and the techs hopped a ride with the mine crew - instead of a risky night jump in high winds. Big balls on t...

Re: small cessna crashes n burns near white rock bc

Sounded like an air pump in the video. Anything more specific on the nature of the engine failure? Good thing it made it to dry land. "The emergency locator transmitter did not activate." Yet we keep on religiously filing flight plans and spending hundreds annually on ELT batteries and tests. Or, at...

Re: Thunder Airlines MU2 accident in Wawa

Nobody post a picture yet? No celphones in Wawa? I'll throw a pilot opinion out there: if the wind is less than 15 knots and the runway is long (like it was here), I just land in whatever direction is the most convenient to a straight in, or has the best approach if the weather is bad. Nitpicking ~4...

Re: Thunder Airlines MU2 accident in Wawa

Why close the airport for two days of investigation? No injuries, one more ball of tin bulldozed to the side, I mean WGF?

The operator can do his own internal investigation, but why deprive Wawa of their air connections over this?

Re: Thunder Airlines MU2 accident in Wawa

The MU2 can land in very short distances. Flaps 40 approach over the fence at 90 knots, touch down at 80 knots, immediate full reverse, brakes, will yield well under 1000 ft, maybe 700 ft. Landing is never the problem in an MU2, you can always land shorter than you can takeoff. Wawa is 4500' and 100...

Re: Helijet extreme lightning strike

What makes it "extreme"? Not their first lightning strike. Early morning lightning is unusual - they left Vancouver Harbor at 910, would have been over the Gulf Islands about 20 minutes later. I wonder: What it was like to lose APs and EFIS IMC in a CB. Did they revert to the standby horizon and ana...

Re: Fatal helicopter crash Prince George

So what's the deal with LTE? Is it an actual thing that can cause an accident, or just a failure to apply full pedal input until the aircraft is facing into wind again? Yeah, kind of a failure of the pilot to anticipate it and then not react positively. In media you will often see "LTE caused the a...

Re: Fatal helicopter crash Prince George

LTE - loss of tailrotor effect. Lots of argument among pilots on what this means and what to do. Let it yaw into wind and drive it forward - if you can. Most experienced Canadian pilots (this one would be considered experienced) can feel the nibble of onset and reflexively adapt.

Re: 3 dead in plane crash friday oct 06

So an aircraft operated by a flight school specifically to train pilots on multi-engine crashed. You'd think an engine problem would be the one contingency they'd be able to handle. If it was an engine issue it opens up a barrel of worms.

Re: Ural 320 forced landing in a field (Russia) 12 September 2023

We're all pilots here, and can recognize when one of our brothers has to make difficult decision to ditch. In this case very finely executed. There are many sides to the same story and BigQ is absolutely right that our media only shows a very biased (pro-Ukraine) view that is not shared outside the ...

Re: Diamond Crash

I'll never tire of saying it, no excuse for all aircraft not to be satellite tracked. You can buy a $50 Spot, and for a couple hundred bucks a year have unlimited 2-minute tracking. Unconscionable to operate without it, and a fraction of the price of all the other gewgaws that we burden our aircraft...

The Cessna 120 manual, under operation checklist, says: H - before landing check (4) carb heat on before reducing throttle. The mystery here is why the pilot was surprised at a loss of power when he chose not to follow the manufacturer's approved checklist. What are they teaching out there? I have c...

Weather a possible cause: RCMP What a crock of shit. The other 100 airplanes flying that area at the same time didn't crash. The "if only it had been clear blue sky daylight it wouldn't have crashed" defence. Idiocy. Heard another source say it was on wheels. Makes no difference really, should have...

And the regulation only calls for ADSB out, not in. That 2026 date will slide too, just like the Class B has. Not much looking inside the cockpit at a screen when you're working a fire with a helicopter.

Re: Bell 412 severs bambi bucket

Fire fighting is 702, not 703, so more relaxed FDT. 722.16 has been updated to silence all the finger-waggers. None of the pilots I've canvassed have any concern with FDTL, are you spinning your own story? More info on the bucket release? Did he release at the belly hook (most don't fly with it arme...
