Re: Cessna 172 on floats - upgrade?
My advice would be upgrade to the 185 if you can afford it. It won't be long in the 180 befor you start thinking hmm, maybe I need extended baggage-stol kit, etc. Also you ll be able to load up 3 family members in the 180 but then you ll be at max weight and un satisfied with the performance!

Not a moment too soon trey cool. My faith in the sarcastic backbone of this site was almost gone. Real pilots wear plaid shirts and hip boots, if they have to wear white its one of three disastrous life events: a wedding, a funeral, or they had to apply to Jazz!

Float flying technique
This stems from comments on the thread about the float 208 accident in China. My float experience is quite limited, Cessna only. I was taught by a very experienced float pilot to use the rolling a float technique as a matter of course, and that it helped with any remotely heavy, high, or hot takeoff...

Well said. Also there are floatplanes that will not fly at anywhere near gross weight without rolling a float. So better learn it and get proficient before graduating from the empty trainers.

What a nice sentiment. Follow your passion and money will follow.
Pretty optimistic. More like: follow your passion, and if you are actually that passionate about it you will make it work with what money you get.

How about extending the ban to all written corespondence? Instead we could all use this brilliant system called "English".

Re: I've bought a canoe. I've a cessna 182. I've questions.
The 16 hrs driving would fly by compared to whatever flight time you would spend wondering if you re about to die... I would say buy some floats for the 182. Then go get it. You'll get two birds stoned at once! In all seriousness I can't imagine any way it would work on wheels without some major mods.

I'd say being able to stay at fl210 on one flow pack is pretty good, considering the age and leaky nature of some 200s.

Re: IFR flight itinerary
I was talking about the kind of ifr itinerary that you file with atc, as opposed to a flight plan also filed with atc. I think if you "popped up" in need of an ifr clearance and didn't have a flight plan at all, they would probably do thier best to fit you in, depending on the airspace and traffic. ...

Re: IFR flight itinerary
If you are leaving g from a controlled airspace, you will get a clearance before you take off as usual. Then you would get cleared to en route frequencies as you leave controlled airspace. Coming back into controlled, you would call center before you enter controlled airspace, and get something like...

Re: Operating on skis from lakes within city limits
As far as the approach goes, I don't know. But for use of the lake, look into which jurisdiction controls the surface. In some places the shoreline(for example, a dock attached to the bank) is controlled by the city, while the lake itself is federal or provincial.

Good advice by all. Weather is fascinating, being able to understand what it's doing is both satisfying and handy for survival. Yes there are questions on cloud base, air masses, kinds of fog etc. In fact the exam writers seem a bit obsesed with naming fog. I find remembering all the names a pain to...

They glide better than some things..supercubs and washing machines. Can't think of much else.
Anyone else wonder how the fcu failure caused low oil pressure? I hope they didn't hook on a new fcu and send him back out

Let's not start that whole flaps up after landing thing again. It was beat to death last year as I recall. I'm more curious about why did someone do this? One switch is shaped like a flap, the other like a wheel, and they are on different sides of the cockpit. I don't buy the "tired" thing. Tired ma...
