Re: Cirrus CAPS deployed - aircraft had crossed Pacific in Feb14
Don't know all the details but wondering why the pilot wasn't using the auto-pilot? Seems like a pretty easy way to avoid or lessen spatial disorientation, especially in IMC. Great to see they survived, beats being a smoldering spot on terra firma. Interesting point made in the article about the air...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?
Unless it has changed.... Landing fee for GA aircraft at LAX....$0.00 .....just saying That's true. The business model for US airports is a completely different monster than here in Canada. In the US, they feel they are a necessity for economic development and required infrastructure. Not sure if t...

Re: PPL Flight Test Info
Very few are outright failures. Usually if someone isn’t going to make it through the test that gets identified on the ground, and the flight doesn’t happen. I believe the pass rate is around 70%, and the rest are partials. TC tracks the pass/fail rates and if a particular school is below the natio...

Re: Another example of the bad info pilots can be given
I'm of the opinion that if someone said that they saw fire, I'm getting the bird on the ground ASAP. I'm not taking a stroll through the cabin to verify it. Even if it turned out to be the strobes or sun lighting up the deicing fluid I'd prefer to be back on terra firma.

Re: Night Rating - You Should Think About It!
This is true. Even not so far north. Night flying over parts of eastern Ontario on a hazy night, over water, in and around Algonquin, are effectively IMC. There have been fatal accidents from those who disrespected the difference, including a recent departure from Parry Sound. Make sure someone tea...

Re: Avgas
Back when I worked in the gas for airplanes business, I was told that avgas production was .025% of gasoline production Would bet that percentage is even lower. I was told that only 1% of the aviation fuel produced in Canada is AvGas, the other 99% is Jet A. Even that number seemed high to me based...

Re: Flight Following (radar surveillance for VFR)
I've used flight following lots of times along the Windsor, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City corridor. Especially like it if I have passengers and they run us right beside the CN Tower. Makes for great photo ops. We also tend to take short cuts through US airspace so we have to request flight followin...

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot
As JasonE said, the Spot and most PLBs wont activate automatically. You'd have to ensure they're on and functioning before the crash in the event you're incapacitated. I had a Spot but the subscription plans have become very silly over the last 2-3 years. When I first activated it, the plan was $100...

Re: Plane registered to Roy Halladay crashes in Gulf off Florida
For the Aircam i would have to disagree. First, the words 'fast' and 'Aircam' do not belong together in the same sentence. Typical aircam flying is at 50 to 60 mph and with Vso of 38 mph you have a good margin (1.5+) over your stall speed. Given that at these speeds you're still only running about ...

I'm using an Excel spreadsheet too. I have the file in a Dropbox folder so it automatically syncs to my other devices. As long as I can get an internet connection, I'm golden.HiFlyChick wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2017 5:55 pm Wow - guess I'm more of a cheapskate than you guys - I just put my stuff in an Excel spreadsheet....

Re: Plane registered to Roy Halladay crashes in Gulf off Florida
that's exactly what Icon wants you to be doing - based on their marketing and promotional material. Seems that's the marketing for AirCam as well. Noticing a lot of photos and videos on Facebook showing pilots running low and fast over ground and water. Sure doesn't leave a lot of "outs" when the l...

Re: Lancair ES type certificate ---Help Needed
How was it that you came to ask their permission to fly something you had a licence to fly anyway? It all boiled down to me not knowing the CARs as well as I should. Contacted TC to get clarification on the "high performance" rules since I couldn't find anything. That's what set the wheels in motio...

Re: Lancair ES type certificate ---Help Needed
They requested it because the horsepower was documented at more than 300HP. I couldn't find any definition of high performance using 300HP anywhere and asked for clarification. Never did get a straight answer from them. At first I thought that maybe they bumped the FAA's number of 200HP to 300HP sin...

Re: 2018 General Hiring Outlook
From what we're seeing on the FTU side of things, if you have a pulse and a CPL, you're going to be hired. Guys with 1500 hours are being pushed to left seat. Rather scary thought when you think that total cockpit time could be less than 2000 hours.

Re: Lancair ES type certificate ---Help Needed
Interesting that TC is being so picky about "on type". TC in Ontario was satisfied with a commercial pilot with turbine time for me to get my high performance (Cessna TTX).

Re: a problem with compass swing
Was the compass swing performed on the ground with the aircraft near the same location each time? Did you try it in the air? I had one that was just out of tolerance on the ground but in the air was fine. Ended up being something magnetic located where we were doing the swing on the ground. Other co...
