What is "PTC avbl" mean in CFS?
I can't find the meaning of this short form in CFS or AIM. It appears in CFS CYAZ Tofino Comm sxn "RCO: Hardy rdo PTC avbl (RAAS)". Had a similar problem with "TR" in metar; not listed as an official short form anywhere I could find. Had to ask an FSS friend who looked at me like I was an idiot : "T...

Re: Ottawa TCA ring size?
Well there’s the answer: outer Class C ring is 24miles around CYOW. How did I miss that? Page 96 of the DAH needs to be on the lap of every VFR pilot in the area!

Ottawa TCA ring size?
Is there a reason the class C ring is not labelled with a distance from CYOW? YYZ’s is clearly marked as 26nm. The mode C ring for CYOW is labelled at 45nm but the more important Class C TCA distance is left to my ruler technique?

Notam expansion gobbledyguck
This complaint has probably been logged already but this notam gets my back up: The helipad at Marathon Hospital (CPX2) is only to be used by twin engine helicopters. Isn’t this an internal Ministry of Health issue? Bad enough that I have to leave my personal B737Max in the hangar, can’t fly with my...

Murphy’s War. Starring the Grumman Duck, with Peter O’toole as co-star. Frank Tallman is not gentle with the rare (even rarer after filming) amphib.

ILS RWY 26 @CYKF , meaning of "NO PT" ?
Does anyone know why the approach plate says "NO PT" , yet there is the 45 degree barb showing how to do the procedure turn, and the profile view says to complete the procedure turn within 6nm of the FAF?

Re: New NOTAM website - old site withdrawn
My first try at this new Notam site for an airport in southern Ontario ?: Top of the list was that a weather balloon was launched in TImmins (300nm away) , and half way down the list was that the minister has banned 737 MAXs from Canadian airspace. Very useful information! I am weary already.

Re: uAvionix SkyBeacon installation in Canada
Why is the FAA flight test verification of ADS-B coming up here? I thought that was required for US aircraft to qualify for the FAA rebate. I doubt Uncle Sam is going to send his money north.(?)

"Mandatory IFR Route" inlcudes a mystery waypoint
I was thoroughly confused when flight planning an IFR flight to St Hubert (CYHU) from the east. The mandatory routing includes ...VIKBU SILVI GORUX OMBRE MAIRE. I could not see GORUX on the LO6 chart. Silvi and Ombre are only 16 miles apart. Gorux does not appear in any plate for CYHU. I assumed it ...

Minimun takeoff visibility: SID vs CAP departure procedure
I noticed the following conundrum in preparing for my upcoming IPC: For an IFR takeoff from Runway 35 CYTA (Pembroke ON) the aerodrome chart only shows SPEC VIS , meaning at least 1sm depending on aircraft type, and you must climb visually over the airport. Yet the BONDE ONE DEP SID has Runway 35 as...

Re: Still confused with the new instruments renewal requirements
Additional questions on this topic: If your currency lapses (6/6/6) do you have to go foggle flying with an instructor as MrAviator19 says above? Can't you log hood time with a pilot friend who is not an instructor? To log an instrument approach it has to be "to minimums": Everyone seems to have a d...

"AU" Weather Services; where is this offered? Not ok for visibility?
In AIM Met 1.2.7 there is reference to this "AU" service that can provide alt. setting and wind for IFR approaches. It mentions it is available at a few "locations"; does anyone know where this is offered? This came up in a question about what constitutes legal "ground visibility" for determining IF...

IPC Test Prep Questions
I am trying to read CARS/AIM to prepare for the ground briefing part of my upcoming IPC and have the following questions (heretofore presented without due consideration to recency, import, hierarchy or stufflikethatthereof); 1. IFR takeoff minima. I fly from an airport without RVR or Tower. I assume...

AWOS question re "ICG"
I'm perplexed about what it means when "ICG" appears in the remarks section of a METAR. A recent Metar at CYPQ shows ceiling 1000' and vis 3SM , temp M3/M3, with ICG in the remarks. Is this saying there is icing in the clouds above the airport? How would it know this? Would this be "known" or "forec...

IFR recency and the 6/6/6 rule
Can someone please point out the section of CARS stipulating what must be done to maintain the IFR rating? In case I misunderstand the legalese here is my question: My 12 month grace period after passing the flight test has lapsed without making the 6/6/6 (my bad). Does the 6 month rule start now, m...

Missed Approach Hold Depiction on CAP plates
Does anyone know of a rational reason why some plates have the missed approach hold depicted while others do not? For example the Waterloo ILS 26 has it printed but the Windsor ILS 25 does not. The only difference I see between these is they have PTs on opposite sides. From my read of the AIM the ho...

Pending IR flight test planning questions
Dear IR pilots: Now that Navcanada has removed (some) Victor airways how do I plan a long distance flight? Just pick RNAV waypoints ("intersections"?) along the way in the general direction of my destination and use AMAs as my minimum altitude? Just file direct and see what happens? Plus what do you...

Re: Constant Descent Angle/New Approach Plates
Wow did I start a war or just a new front of an old one?! Thanks for all the thoughtful responses. I think I'll just do the awkward math and use the GPS' GS to get my descent rate. If I am guilty of overthinking the issue, that's because the INRAT made me that way.
Appreciate the insight.
