Re: GPS direct vs. "Preferred IFR routes"

No time is wasted. We often get 'flight planned route' with direct filing, and that's on a YHM - YQT. Good practice if you do use the preferred routes, but they're not mandatory and not always issued. Ask for what you (as the PIC) want (altitude for weather, routing for company), then follow your cl...

Re: GPS direct vs. "Preferred IFR routes"

It is my understanding that you can file whatever routing you want with FSS. The routing that you get with your clearance from ATC will depend on the airspace, available altitudes, as well as how busy the airspace is at the time of your flight. It is this initial clearance that will determine your c...

Re: Sault or Seneca?

Oddly enough, your description does sound familiar. Pretty sure I know who you're talking about. A hell of a guy for sure, pretty good hands and feet too - from what I remember.

I graduated 2004. I taught from Nov. 05-Aug. 08.

It wasn't all rainbows and puppy dogs, but I found the learning experience (aviation, life, and as an instructor) invaluable.

Re: Sault or Seneca?

lionheart made some good points/comparisons. In the end it boils down to what you want out of your career. If you're interested in getting to the end result (airline/bush/MNR/whatever your goal may be) then the first couple of posters are correct; go the private route and complete your licences on t...

Re: Sault or Seneca?

If I'm not mistaken, Sault College does have an opportunity to get a degree through Algoma University (or it did 2 years ago). I'd enquire about that, if you really want a degree.

Re: CFB Trenton Wing Commander charged two counts murder . . .

The locals have already begun to turn on CF members in Trenton/Belleville. One bad apple has turned back a decade of progress in the fickle relationship of Canadians and their military. I was in the reserves around 9/11 and I can vaguely remember an advisory against wearing the uniform to or from w...

Isis, Unless you're actually a military police person yourself, your opinion is just as important as mine; in other words you can use it to buy a small coffee at Tim's if you also happen to have a dollar fifty. In my experience even currently serving members are foggy when it comes to the ins and o...

Re: CFB Trenton Wing Commander charged two counts murder . . .

I vaguely recall an incident some years ago, a couple of high school students who also happened to be Air Cadets were involved in some kind of dickens at their school, either making a bomb threat or bringing some kind of firearms to the school. Anyway, what I remember about the whole thing is that ...

An airplane is not flown by a committee, an airplane is flown by the crew and the go no go decision should be made based on all the information that is available to said crew. The people in the back are part of the crew in the sense that they may have needs for the patient that has to be part of th...

Re: ORNGE...say you didn't...

I'm unfamilliar with the different types of aircraft used to fly medevacs across Canada, but I know that space is at a premium inside my aircraft; no extra space for egos. Someone mentioned CRM. I consider the medics I fly with to be very valuable resources. Why not keep them in the loop? We're a te...

Re: Your personal little quirks on the radio.

If the frequency isn't too busy, I try to keep things light and friendly and sometimes add a little humour when appropriate. For instance, there are some fun phrases when it comes to calling in with the ATIS. Whiskey = booze news X-ray = x-rated information Recently I tried this one but I don't thin...

"......Any conflicting traffic please advise" The reason to say this one is to give the ident again, as in: "... any conflicting traffic please advise <ac ident>" I don't want to beat a dead horse (this has been argued many times on here) but usually what I miss is the AREA as well as the aircraft....

Remember the point of a procedure turn is to position the aircraft accordingly for the approach. Always respect minimum altitudes for your sector when descending IMC. A straight-in approach is allowed providing you receive clearance (where appropriate), establish yourself on the inbound course prior...

Missing an approach or several because one does not get the visual clues to complete the approach and landing is not a failure on the part of the pilot/'s it is evidence the pilot/'s have done the job they are licensed to do. Exactly! But, the feeling is real. The attitude is real. The pressure is ...

Re: Minimums

Just recently I flew my first missed approach due to weather on a commercial flight. My reaction and thoughts afterwards are what attracted me to this thread. We were MEDEVAC going into CYYB. Winds were very strong out of the West and so we opted for vectors onto the back course 26. Once on the appr...

Re: CAP question

Remember, the MSA is for obstacle clearance only. The approach takes into account controlled airspace, noise abatement, special procedures at the aerodrome, etc.

Think of the MOCA vs. the MEA

... ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die! hehehe

Have a look at the airspace around the airport. It may be an attempt to keep you in controlled airspace throughout the approach.
