Re: Employment Hedge

A construction sideline is always good. I had done drywall and painting. It seems that there's usually always someone looking for another pair of hands even if you're not all that skilled because many are willing to train if you're willing to work.

Re: I hope not...

Although I am no longer there, some of the finest people I have ever known in the industry wore CanJet wings. It's a real pity see it all end so unceremoniously.

Re: The stupidity of some people

Some people are just chronically stupid, irresponsible and phenomenally short-sighted. They're the same folks who rubberneck at an accident site hampering the ambulance and fire fighters from getting to the accident.

I got an offer for seasonal. I'm a 10K hour guy with 4.5K hours on 73B's and 73C's working overseas as a TFW in somebody else's country looking to come home to roost. It does happen.

Re: What GA Airplane Were You Meant to Fly? (AOPA Quiz)

I got the Beech 18. Ironically, I have a few hours from my first flying job a long time ago back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I found it a handful then, but without an FMC, flight directors, autopilot, auto throttle, auto land etc... I'd probably find it a handful today too.

Re: New medical requirements

I heard this was coming down the pipe for years now. I checked the TC website CARs and didn't see it changed yet. I know they do a pretty good job keeping the CARs up to date. Do you have any hard proof in-hand of this? I for one would welcome it.

Re: Buying an airplane the first time - insurance question

COPA. I've been an owner for 24 years and over time they have proven to be the least expensive choice. I tried others when I first bought my plane, before I knew any better. A friend of mine put me on to COPA and been with them since. Keeping this in mind though, I've never had a claim so I can't re...

Re: Aerovee in a Luscombe 8a

Thanks for the info guys, I really didn't think I was going to create all that much discussion on the OM category. I suppose when the time comes to overhaul, I might just go for the C85 instead. It'll give me electrics, increased horsepower (albeit it marginally). I know this will require a new fire...

Same here. I refer to my days off as heading out to a "real" airport to fly a "real" airplane. GA never lost it's appeal for me.

Sorry, I should have clarified that my Luscombe is flying with an owner-maintenance C of A so STC's aren't necessary.

Re: Part time CFI plus full time job, is it too much?

Back when I was instructing, we had quite a few part-timers who had "real" jobs to pay the bills. On the whole, they seemed to be a pretty happy lot. One was a fire-fighter, another two were flight attendants, but some had 9 to 5er jobs. In retrospect, they were the backbone of the instructional sta...

Aerovee in a Luscombe 8a

I was thinking of replacing my tired old Continental A65 for something with a few more horses and some of them new-fangled electric luxuries like a starter. One of the options I am considering is the Aerovee engine.

Has anyone done this before? Any regrets?

Cheers

Re: Canjet going under (again)?

It's the old arguement about whether we (us working stiffs that is) have any real power at all. George Carlin said it this way:

I saw the memo, it's for permanent positions: 3 in YYZ and another 3 in YUL.

Best of luck

Re: Stop The Puppy Mills!

I think back on my instructing days, and I must admit that I was shockingly blunt to bright eyed commercial prospects (to put it politely) about the industry. Although I was a line instructor, I had the opportunity to teach a few seminars to the aviation college students being trained at my FTU. I u...

Re: The battle of the low-time pilot

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention.... when you say to some folks around the airport that you're considering buying a taildragger, don't listen to the "there's only two kinds of taildragger pilots; those that have groundlooped and those who will". I can tell you that it is total bullshit and come...

Re: The battle of the low-time pilot

If you're looking at possibly buying an airplane to build time on, have you considered perhaps getting something like a Cessna 120/140 or a Champ or Luscombe? I bought a Luscombe for a whole lot less money (in Canada) and found it to be one of the best moves I ever made. I built my hours quickly and...

Re: Question: In 20 years, what percentage will be civilian?

I'm working out of Germany this summer, and from what I can see, high speed rail has all but already replaced the regional flights. I flew from Berlin to Frankfurt. The drive to the TXL airport (north end of the city) took about an hour. Incidentally the Berlin main train station is downtown and rea...

Most definately I would recommend the Truro Flying Club. Stu is a real straight-up kind of guy and the folks there are from the real world. It's a fun small flying club that will let you learn in a fraternal environment. They have members there that you can share a coffee with that have real world a...

Re: CYHZ ILS

When did the LOC\BC for 32 disappear? It is now just an RNAV, but the BC signals can still be read. Was it a cost cutting thing or a certification thing? It's a lot more convenient for the guys who can do RNAV, however for the little guys without the equipment, it limits 32 for those not-so-nice VFR...
