Technically, a medical doesn’t expire. It validates a licence for a period of time following date of last examination.

You know your financial situation better than I do, but personally I'd lean towards sticking it out.

In the meantime, however, hit the books best you can so you can hit the ground running when you can commit yourself full time.

VORs and NDBs are slowly being decommissioned all across the country, so their associated A, B, V, J routes/ways are disappearing, too. L, T, and Q you see now are fixed RNAV routes.

Have fun, exciting to get back into flying. At the end of the day the CDI is still a CDI!

Yes, but if I may say -- You have a category 1 medical, exam was on X date. It never turns into a category 3, never becomes "valid for" category 3, never any other way of saying the same thing.
