Re: PPL on floats

I got my RPP on floats at Sudbury Aviation a few years back. Still only have a float rating. Worked out well for me as I finished with 50 hours of "float time" (including 6 hours of post flight test rental time) which made it possible to find insurance when I purchased a plane.

Re: Thinking about plane purchase

Thought I would come back to update this thread. I had been looking for a float plane for several years, more seriously last year and this year (harder with the current market) and I recently purchased 172D on floats that is in the Owner Maintenance category. Did my refresher training in it and flew...

Re: RPP+Floats or PPL+Floats

I got my RPP on floats in Sudbury at Sudbury Aviation while I am younger than yourself it was driven by a longtime dream/recreational interest. Because I had to travel for my lessons getting the RPP allowed me to finish faster and have an "End Point" with at least the RPP after 2 summers worth of le...

Re: What should a PPL student know before first solo ?

For the few times I have sent pilot solo, a prerequisite was that they could land properly power off from down wind - not just enter a glide and power out of it, but actually land power off consistently well. That, combined with the mantra "Aviate, Navigate, communicate" firmly set into their minds...

Re: Owner Maintenance Question

Thanks for the input. I am aware that OM is a one way street. I am intrigued by the benefits of Owner Maintenance after doing a lot of research on an amateur built but like the idea of all aluminum vs fabric for my use. If I move forward I will definitely work with an AME for a through pre-buy and w...

Owner Maintenance Question

In my search for a plane I have come across one that interested me but there is a concerning point that I was hoping those more experienced on this board could help me out with. I looked at a Cessna 172 that is in owner maintenance and I am curious on the paperwork behind one "Mod" that was complete...

Re: Thinking about plane purchase

Thought I would come back to this thread as it provided a lot of good information previously. I have been keeping my eye out for planes and a few have piqued my interest. The more I look at things I would love to get a 172 with a 180hp engine and bigger floats (Larger than the CAP/EDO2000s) for the ...

Re: Ontario float bases

https://www.hawkair.com This is the website for the operation on Hawk Lake. I believe they still operate a piston beaver and C180 so should have avgas. Not sure on sales though. I am pretty sure Forde Lake Air out of hornepayne will sell gas with prior notice. At least they did the past few years. N...

Re: Float Plane Insurance

I recently completed my RPP entirely on floats at Sudbury Aviation and was quite happy with my training there. They also rent their 172 float planes for solo time building after the completion of the rating. Would be another option for building float time if required. They also offer a 10 hour "bush...

Re: Thinking about plane purchase

The more I look at the numbers as much as I want it to the numbers just don’t work on a 180 for me. Now that I have completed my license I am going to really start looking for a 172 on floats. 180hp preferred but may not be feasible. The lake I will be based on has lots of room and will just limit m...

Re: PPL/RPP Training on Floats

Figured I would finish this thread off. Successfully completed my RPP off this week. Finished with 42 hours in my book with the last solo hour completed after the flight test. I was very happy the instruction I received at Sudbury Aviation and would recommend them to anyone wanting to complete a RPP...

Re: Thinking about plane purchase

Buy a homebuilt or OM taildragger on floats. It'll save you a lot of $$$, and you will learn a lot more about your plane. Best part is you are not tied to the ridiculous prices of the certified world. I say taildragger because it'll make you a better pilot, if you ever take it off of floats ;) I di...

Thinking about plane purchase

I am hoping that over the next 2-3 weeks I will be completing my RPP on floats. I passed my preflight and written last summer but ran out of time to complete my flight test (was a little disappointing but gave me a reason to force me to do some flying this year). I am hoping that a week or so of fly...

Re: PPL training on floats?

I am planning on finishing up my RPP on floats this summer at Sudbury Aviation. Ran out of time last summer after several small delays outside the control of both myself and the instructors. Did all work except for one flight for spin training in their float planes. Glassy did present some delays wh...

Re: PPL/RPP Training on Floats

Thought I would post an update to this. Just completed my first solo today after 25 hours flying with Sudbury Aviation planning on completing my RPP on floats. I did about 10 hours last summer and the remainder this summer. My solo was delayed by a few hours because of weather, hours 19-24 were eith...

Re: How To Land A C172 - Thread Reference!

I got a great example of seat position last week while practicing Glassy Water Takeoffs and Landings with my instructor. I discovered that when I am flying I sit slightly forward in the seat compared to when the Instructor was demonstrating (due to avoiding interfering with the controls). This resul...

Re: PPL/RPP Training on Floats

Small update to this, I was in contact with a couple of different schools and barring any major changes I am going to at least start some training this summer (budgeted for about 10 hours) to make sure that flying is definitely something I want to put the time, effort and money into. It is looking l...

Re: PPL/RPP Training on Floats

Thanks for the insight makes a lot of sense. I have done a fair bit of research but wanted to get some other opinions. I realize this will be an expensive endeavour, just wanted to make sure the extra expense of flying on floats right from the start makes sense. While my career (which I only include...
