Re: "Big men" in aviation

Are the Big Men the ones wearing their 4 bars around the Mall to impress teenage girls?
one further - to bars and night clubs to pick up dates. First hand knowledge but that was many years ago we had a cpl guys doing this, needless to say once the rumour mill started up they were dealt with.

Re: Floatplane Crash Thread

Like a few others here I started my aviation career flying floats and skis and did it for several years. Wheels were just to get the aircraft to the hanger for changeover in the spring. No breaks, 2500 foot strip and no one thought anything of it. There were some basic things that you got you ass ki...

Re: Check that Seat is Properly Latched

I have had the seat slide back on more than one occasion and was always lucky to have a passenger or freight behind me. After those I always grabbed the float kit strut and held on after the power was set. A very experience pilot friend of mine was not so lucky and paid the ultimate price. There is ...

Re: 1900 replacement?

It was an example of northern forward thinking - Damn I personally have been involved from time to time (starting and finishing my career) with a DC-3 strapped to my ass -- and that started in 1971 -- so me alone 50 years of DC3 to DC3T with 35 years driving other stuff in the middle. There are enou...

Re: Taildragger Noseover/Groundloop Thread

The fire breathing tail draggers, wonder why it's called conventional gear. It would be interesting if we had stats to compare landing/Takeoff ground incidents between trike and tail wheel. Parameters from flair on landing to stable climb on departure. It might be an eye opener. I think the reason w...

Re: Seaplanes at Night

As stated, if you have lighted water runways there is no law against operating a float plane at night. They are very few and far between. Like many "old time" float drivers I have landed many times after legal dark. The reason I stopped was not because of the landing after dark but what you might hi...

Re: Flying Through Buildups on Descent

The captain is clearly at fault. It should be obvious that there will be turbulence and he/she should advise the f/a to sit down and strap in. Extra time should be allotted prior to decent to secure the cabin. Descending through cumulus clouds is a pretty common happening. If they have a solid centr...

Re: Brampton Flying Club's 75th anniversary

Interesting they didn't mention the relocation. Almost half their life was spent at McLaughlin Rd and Queen St. basically downtown "old" brampton. That is where I learned to fly as well as my father and mother. Club had 3 champs and a great coffee pot. 2 grass strips 1800 ft long and a 1 room clubho...

Re: Air travel will suck this summer -blame airlines short sighted layoffs

Clearly the health care system is broken and when you need additional 3rd party insurance for full coverage if you are out of your home province in canada, that says it all. It might have been the liberals but health care, same as transportation should be federal not provincial. I'm a federalist and...

"without the intervention of any element of force, fraud, deceit, duress, over-reaching, or other ulterior form of constraint or coercion;" And their lies the problem - I have heard this argument when the no smoking revolution took place. It's not about human rights and most on this band wagon are ...

Re: Air travel will suck this summer -blame airlines short sighted layoffs

Welcome to the world of airlines. It's simple all companies are run by short sighted bean counters. Nothing will change, even when they are proved wrong more often than not when it comes to layoffs. I think all people be required to vaccinate and if people choose not to they can't travel or send the...

It seems for whatever reason I got sanctioned on my reply here but I will make a very short statement. If you don't live or have lived the situation you have no real clue on what the "underbelly" truly is. Some even transit through the reserves and hamelt of the north more interested in building tim...

Here is some avcan speculation for you (some knowledge of that company ops) Long day, arctic return trip return and possibly not their only flight. Re: Night VFR rule changes

As written, yes you would have to file or have night vision, also have a gps capable of approaches etc. Not if you are day vfr -- I would hazard a guess that the majority of general aviation hobbyist will still choose not to fly at night. At the end of the day how will this effect commercial pilots...

I don't expect you need to file IFR but simply be IFR rated. If we are talk...

Re: Pop-Up IFR

Pop ups are so much a thing of the past. We would never file an IFR flight plan and just grab that clearance. The question is why???? - just lazy for the most part. Why do pilots insist in "going VFR" yup you got it lazy and trying to save time. It's all bullshit. Just file that flight plan or itine...

Re: Night VFR rule changes

With improved simulators and even the ability to do rides in the sim is it not likely less hassle to get the IFR ticket. With proposed luxury tax seems to me people who can afford and aircraft for night vfr xcountry should just get that instrument rating. It seems that south of 49 lots of general av...
