Re: short field landing (Stabilized Approach)
Think of it like this: the more you adjust the power, the less you have a stabilized approach and the more you deviate from the performance that is sought. What else are you hoping to hear? Well Put! I finding from my last flight if I make minor power adjustments or keep the power in a little longe...

Re: short field landing (Stabilized Approach)
All of my life I have used power to precisely control where I land on the runway up to the point of flaring. In so far as this is not a recommended technique in any Flight Manual or POH that I have read, this is not what is desired or required for this exercise. I'm not talking about a significant ...

short field landing (Stabilized Approach)
Is anyone else having trouble with the new (ish) commercial test standards for short field landings? All of my life I have used power to precisely control where I land on the runway up to the point of flaring. Now they want a stable approach at 200' AGL which means "Appropriate power settings applie...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC
I don't bother getting into an argument about this stuff...I just ask why they think that, and then look it up myself Yep, that's a great approach to take. Pick up the good habits/tips and incorporate it into your flying and move on. Instructors vary considerably when it comes to routines in the co...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC
There's a difference between "good practices" and the law, and there should always be a clear differentiation between the two. Totally agree. I understand what he was getting at but I was asked if I was "required" to contact Saskatoon during that phase of my trip. I'm such a literal guy. My answer ...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC
Yeah its definitely been my experience that flight following (at least in the Prairies) is not encouraged. I've heard some folks out east say it is used it a little more (Toronto area etc). I started flying and got my PPL down there then came up here after meeting a girl. But in the states if you we...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC
I've had mixed experiences calling class C and D towers when just passing by. Some have been helpful and thanked me for tuning in, and others have told me to f*ck off because i'm not in their airspace. So now i follow my guide above. Yeah I've had similar experiences . I would be more likely to cal...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC
Yep, this was just for flight planning for the CPL flight test Nav portion. Well I'm glad to see I'm not going crazy as it is clearly class E. My instructor seemed pretty adamant that you had to talk to someone though. He's a great instructor and is the kinda guy who considers best practice a standi...

Re: CPL Exam Writers - Please read
Since you need a Letter of Recommendation and my flight school didn't offer CPL Ground School I went to Harv's air and was happy with the resources (hundreds of hours of video, pretty realistic practice tests, etc.) I passed my exam but it was pretty tough. I posed the question on here about which t...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC
Actually I would be at 5500. It's just that I don't see any specific indication on the VNC to contact Saskatoon. If you go down to Regina its the same exact airspace but there is no requirement to contact Regina unless you are planning on entering the control CZ. I agree it would be wise either way ...

When to contact Tower as per VNC
Sorry if this is a pretty newbie question; I was talking with my instructor the other day and he asked me if I had to contact Saskatoon ATC if I was following the below track. I said no only if I wished to enter the class D CZ. He said that was incorrect, I had to contact ATC prior to entering the t...

Re: Plane dumps fuel over Los Angeles
...and the crew will be getting their ass roasted with possible demotion for the captain if the risk analyst finds he erred. Curious if this would be a career ending oversight? I've done a few boneheaded things in my flying that I wish I could take back. Once I forgot to tighten the oil cap, then w...

PIC DUAL Same time in the States
Hi Everyone, Going through my log book prepping to hand it over to TC for a CPL. So way back in the day when I was flying in the US after I got my PPL I logged Dual and PIC while under the hood for the same flight at the direction of my instructor. This appears to be correct in the States as I was t...

Re: CPL Flight Test Blind spots.
Yeah I'll have to touch base with my instructor about Forced Approaches. He rarely bring them up since my PPL.FreelanceInstructor wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 9:18 pm Honestly, I would put your efforts into the 2 areas most commonly failed on any ride. IE. forced approach & slow flight.
Thanks for the tips!

CPL Flight Test Blind spots.
Hey Folks, I'm gearing up to take my CPL flight test in couple of weeks. Just wondering what areas gave you the most problems or blind spots that caught you off guard? I hear the Pwr-off 180 messes a lot of people up.
Thanks for sharing!

Logbook Botch from years ago....
Hey Guys (and Gals), This is crazy but back in the day when I was training in the US, after two Redbird Sim flights my CFII told me to log that time in PIC and TT (in addition to sim/inst etc.). Why he told me to log it as PIC still has me scratching my head. But anyways, It's only 2.5 hrs of time, ...
