"Stickers" in Aviation Document Booklet
Good Evening All, I finally received my Aviation Document Booklet - between the time of my application for it (September 2017) - and now (December 2017) (92 Days Service Standard - was quoted 90 days but there was a huge snow storm , so no worries) - I completed my night rating and sent in that appl...

Night Rating - You Should Think About It!
~ Good Morning all, You may remember me from such posts as "I CAN'T LAND A C172" or "I"M LOST - HOW TO READ A VFR CHART" - I started my PPL training in May & recently completed my Night Rating. I just wanted to share with you a brief video of my night x-country to downtown Toronto. Everyone on this ...

Re: ~ Wanted: VNC Sectional Map Reading Tips
Thank you so much for a detailed answer. I am planning my Flight Test "cross country" portion and marking off a prominent landmark every 5 mile tick, that should hopefully confirm if i'm on track, or to the right or left of track. I know i may be weird, but I read my maps North up always. I find it ...

Re: ~ Wanted: VNC Sectional Map Reading Tips
Thank you for your thoughtful answers! I do have 3 VORs in the area, and my iPhone with FltPlnGo and a GPS with direct to functionality but I was really bothered that I wasn't making the cut with paper charts! I'll follow the tips next time I'm up ☺️ I do find myself over navigating quite a lot, "th...

~ Wanted: VNC Sectional Map Reading Tips
~ Was recently hopelessly lost and could only use a paper chart to find out general location, was wondering, does anyone have any tips about the best landmarks to look for from the air and how to avoid fixation on the map. Any other navigation tips using just a map and visible landscape appreciated....

Re: ~ Master Off before Avionics Master
I understand the fear and myth of possibly low voltage to the avionics during engine start when it draws a lot of power - I just cannot comprehend how there is a risk of that happening during shut down requiring avionics off before everything else. Thank you for the detailed answer! The master switc...

Re: ~ Master Off before Avionics Master
That seems to be the concensus in many checklists, I've seen it done with Avionics Off before Master Off & Master Off then Avionics Off, I'm just looking to understand if Engine Off ---- >> Master Off ----- >> Avionics Off is in fact harmful : Master Off results in no power any electrical component ...

~ Master Off before Avionics Master
Was wondering everyone's thoughts regarding a Cessna 172 - Startup: Master On - Engine On - Avionics On Shutdown: Avionics Off - Mixture Lean - Master Off =================== When doing the live mag check before shut down, I have seen two variations: 1) Left, Back to Both, Right, Back to Both 2) Lef...

Re: ~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
Thank you for the suggestion! Great point to do it while icing levels are 8000 ft on average. It's quite a bit different being right in the middle of the cloud than just flying on the edge. What you're describing is more akin to flying with a hood...you still get some small bits of ground reference....

Re: ~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
I have flown at night once, never mind the dangers and disorientation, in a single engine, trying to find a wide, well lit road for a forced landing if the engine quits is the real danger. I've always been taught "if the engine fails, where how far can I glide in each direction and where would I lan...

Re: ~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
Are you admitting to purposely flying in cloud without an IFR rating or even a smidge of experience? Not into the clouds, flirting with them, you know sometimes there's very light, event horizon let's call it around them, beside them, that area. Here's a photo of what it looked like, there were a f...

Re: ~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
I am planning on obtaining a CPL - are you suggesting that I start a new PTR as soon as my PPL PTR gets shipped off to Transport Canada ? Re: ~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
Yes, 5 hours is enough for a PPL. This exercise is use as an example to show you how your inner ear can fool your brain and you must rely on your instruments. Last time I checked I don't fly with my eyes closed. \ Me neither, but my eyes weren't much use inside a fluffy cloud, all you can see outsi...

~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
In the final portions of my PPL doing some full panel instrument training, I was asked to close my eyes and maintain straight and level flight...44 seconds before I was in a deadly spiral dive. Is the 5 hours enough or should I be considering an instrumental rating? (currently considering a night ra...

Re: ~ Is Foreflite worth it ? Navigation Questions
Thank you so much for such a detailed and helpful answer. I'm sure I'm just overly concerned and it will all work out with a bit more practice just like my landings did. It is very common now to see students using ForeFlight nowadays, more like become dependent on it. Master the paper first. Use the...

Re: ~ Is Foreflite worth it ? Navigation Questions
I don't know if I'm QUITE ready to mark on them...just joking! This is why I asked the question, so folding and creasing and marking is the norm. That's good to know! So I won't feel bad about ruining my chart. Thank you for the advice. Since you have to do your flight test with paper charts, there ...

Re: ~ Is Foreflite worth it ? Navigation Questions
Not at all, I just wanted everyone's thoughts on navigation because I noticed that in Flight, paper charts tend to be tedious to use, to determine distance, accurate headings, or even read since they are so tiny. Yes, I'm aware of the Flight Test requirements which is exactly why I'm reluctant to go...

Re: ~ Is Foreflite worth it ? Navigation Questions
Yes, I'm aware of the Flight Test requirements which is exactly why I'm reluctant to go to ForeFlight, because i want to struggle through the learning process of using actual charts that don't break, turn off, or die when they get a little wet. Thanks for the tips guys. I'm just about to start the N...

~ Is Foreflite worth it ? Navigation Questions
Good Evening, I was wondering if anyone here used ForeFlight mobile application for Flight Navigation - is it worth it if you're flying in Canadian aerospace ? Re: How To Land A C172 - Thread Reference!
This is DEFINITELY, the BIGGEST thing I need to work on for my landings! Once the mains are down, I need to calm down, relax, and keep back pressure and let the nose gently lower down! I wince overtime it clunks down Cessna oleos are a little on the fussy side, and a lot on the expensive side. Allow...

I take everything as constructive! Thank you for the tip! I get exactly what you mean, I think 70 - 80 was a bit fast, so I had to perform some down, up , down up corrections to avoid ballooning and being flat, I will be working on a speed closer to 1.3Vso going forward :) Great, happy to see you ar...

Re: I CAN'T LAND A C172
I'm guessing you are referring to the point on the runway that stays in the same spot on your windshield, not moving up (you're too low) or down (you're too high) during the approach.
Is that what you're referring to ?
