Re: Sault College Aviation Question
You should be fine. Now a days they take many more students then they can train.. expecting many of them to drop out after 1st semester beacuase they can’t hold a 3.0 gpa and/or pass every course. First semester you don’t touch a plane so they can afford to have a huge amount of first years to get ...

Re: Confederation or Sault College Graduates and Current Students
Seems most of the Ontario based college programs are struggling to meet timelines for flying due to staff instructor shortfalls. Some are subcontracting out portions of flight training syllabus to third party flight training institutions. Not sure if this will affect program intake numbers for fall...

Job for Funding Flight Training
Hi all, I’m currently in grade 10 and looking at different ways to make a good career for myself flying. If I were to work full time for 2 or so years (living with mom & dad), what job would you recommend trying to do? If anyone else took this route, what work did you do to save up for flight school...

Re: Maintenance Engineer/ Commercial Pilot
Before I start I would like to make it very clear that I have enjoyed both flying aircraft AND fixing them when I tried them out. For flying I took a discovery flight and for a maintenance experience I visited my cousin at work (who is an maintenance engineer in Newfoundland). I am currently in gra...

Re: Confederation or Sault College Graduates and Current Students
Oh they have a shuttle at Sault. That's convenient. Did you have to pay? How much did it cost? Shuttle was included. It was driven out by the morning and afternoon duty instructors, as long as flying was on (sometimes flying was cancelled due to weather and the sim schedule would go into effect ins...

Re: Confederation or Sault College Graduates and Current Students
I graduated from Sault College back in 2008. When I was there, it was a 3 year, 7 semester course (you flew through your first summer until you had the PPL done). Flying was half of the week starting in semester 2, with regular classes the other half of the week. By the end of the course, you gradu...

Confederation or Sault College Graduates and Current Students
I am interested in going to either Confederation or Sault College for Aviation - Flight Management. For any current or former students of these programs: What is the schedule like? How often did/do you fly? How did/do you get to the airport? Would I need a car for Confederation? (I know Sault for su...

Re: Career Paths
The key to landing your first flying job is CONNECTIONS! As you work through your private and commercial licenses, you’ll meet people, build relationships, and learn from other people. The aviation community is fairly small. If you have the right connections, and have a good attitude about everythi...

Re: Career Paths
There are many different ways. My path was dictated by circumstance and sheer bullheaded stubbornness. More than one pilot has called me nuts for wanting to try, but I had to. So I write this having just started in my first aviation job and working towards a pilot position doing pipeline survey wor...

Re: Subsidized College Programs (Ontario)
I went to Sault college and i can honestly say that it was not that good. If i could of done it all over again i would have done it privately. I have alot of buddies that went to confed and it sounds like that was a much better run program Yes that's the message I'm getting here. I would do it priv...

Re: Maintenance Engineer/ Commercial Pilot
You could always take the Aircraft Maintenance program, and start apprenticing at a flight school, and if you are lucky, as I was, the flight school will let you take some lessons for free, attend ground school at a reduced cost, and trade some overtime for flight hours. Ah, that's a good point. Ju...

Re: Maintenance Engineer/ Commercial Pilot
If you are worried about medical conditions nothing prevents you from going for a CAT 1 medical right now. You dont need to be enrolled in any flying training or anything. Find a CAME (Civil Aviation Medical Examiner) and make an appointment. They'll answer all your questions (for a fee of course)....

Career Paths
I'm pretty new to aviation and want to be a pilot. Looking at different potential programs and career outlooks, it seems there are so may different paths you could follow. I'm interested in hearing other peoples stories about how their careers have developed. Tell me the good and the bad, I want to ...

Re: The importance of having a degree
I've seen some smart university grads and stupid "how did you ever graduate elementary school" uni grads. I've seen great pilots with degrees but I've also seen greater pilots without degrees. Anyways, I'm not interested in getting into the debate about who is better or worse since no one is better...

Re: The importance of having a degree
This is all relative. Education is but proof that one is committed and capable of finishing a complex task or goal. I have absolutely no problem with airlines preferring degrees, but where I do have a problem is where an experienced pilot without post secondary education is passed over for someone ...
