Re: Is Marc Garneau incompetent?

I would characterize Marc Garneau as complicit, not incompetent. A few facts: 1.Marc Garneau is a retired astronaut. He is not, to the best of my knowledge, a pilot or the holder now or at any time in the past of a valid licence for aircraft of any type. 2. The windmill issue at CNY3 and Clearview i...

Re: Bubble window on a Cessna 180

A few things to consider about bubble windows: 1. Most bubble windows require a second latch in the STC. Those latches are pricey and they really are necessary due to the lift created by the bubble pulling on it. 2. The window will cost you some speed. I flew a 185 that gained 5 m.p.h in cruise when...

Re: Sub-Sonex Jet

Is the U.S. underwriter represented by a Canadian broker? Is the underwriter licenced to write business in Canada?

If the answer to either of these questions is "No" I would be very concerned about the validity of coverage on a "C" registered aircraft.

Re: Freelance (float) instruction

I would suggest that you have the student aircraft owner add you to the policy as an Additional Named Insured. Don't let the broker tell you that you will be covered by an Open Pilot Clause or they will have you named to the Pilot Roster! You do not have to be an owner of the aircraft or corporation...

Re: Fire extinguisher in cabin

Halon is also better in case of an engine intake fire on the ground. Dry chemical will result in an engine tear down, as it is like throwing sand in and will cause ring chatter (amongst other damage). The engine might seem fine immediately but wait a few hours and see what happens to your oil consum...

Re: Amphib systems refresher

All amphibs have different positives and negatives. Here are my observations: Aerocets: Positives: No corrosion issues with the float hulls (although water absorption and migration through the foam cored hull sides and decks if holed can be huge!) Negatives: No uplocks on the mains which allows the ...

Re: CYTZ/CPZ9 Docking Area

The last time I was at CYTZ/CPZ9 on May 1, the new dock was still in a state similar to what it was last December and the ramp was operational (although I didn`t use it, I operated off the runway on amphibs.). I was contacted by the new airport manager earlier in the spring and the new dock is suppo...

I believe that the floatplane beaching dolly is owned by the TPA and is maintained (if you can call it maintained?) by Trans Capital. Re: CYTZ/CPZ9 Docking Area

This dock certainly is not in the location that I recommended when they consulted me with their yard people. I also hope that there is a floating section that runs north/south that connects these fingers as it doesn`t look very strong to take an east wind in the harbour. The ramp also needs repairs ...

Re: COPA Insurance Fail

I think a lot of people miss the point of what they are buying and focus primaily on the price. Remember that all you ar buying when you pay for insurnce is service from the broker (no aircraft insurance is sold by agents in Canada) and a wad of paper (or electonic bits) that says what the insurance...

A FTU O.C. is not required to conduct seaplane training. They are usually done on a 703 (Air Taxi) O.C. with all the required paperwork and commercial insurance coverage that meets CTA requirements. If the rating is done on a private aircraft the student must have some ownership in the aircraft and ...
