beaverdriver, some of the craziest assertions ever! if you are flying that guys beaver and he says start it that way, do it(only when he is around though), but if most owners saw you work the throttle 20 times to start it they might send you packing. if i were a passenger i would jump out of the air...

rowdy, you are right about the pooling causing fire, so after its been primed and you turn it over you leave the mags off till the prop has pulled through a couple times/starter stops accellerating, then flip the mags on, that way the fuel has been pulled into the cylinders. and you still need a bac...

the poh says pumping throttle below 500rpm is an invitation for a backfire, which is true. on a radial that is supercharged that means an explosion back through the blower. it is also doesn't work well a lot of the time at start up, whereas the primer will keep it kicking over safely until it catche...
