Re: Snowbird crash in CYKA
And Boeingboy said: In a jet fitted with ejection seats, the mindset changes. An off-field forced landing is very likely to be fatal, and is typically only attempted in the case of ejection failure. Honest question: If the Tutor jet glides better than a 172, wouldn't that make it even more suited t...

Re: Snowbird crash in CYKA
With all due respect to the occupants , one of the #1 rules in aviation and one that has been there since the beginning , LAND STRAIGHT AHEAD if you loose the engine in take off. OK, against my better judgement I am going to weigh in here because it kind of bothers me that people can so easily jump...

Re: Cherokee Six missing near Kingston?
I am writing this not about the tragedy near Kingston, but in reply to those who think more training would help make better decision making. I am an IFR rated private pilot with 2000 hours on our Cherokee 6 . We have flown all over the UgS and Canada and cope with local weather phenomena. Almost ev...

Re: Atpl question
Well i have two type ratings on over 12,500 and they still said the exams were expired. The whole point of them was for eventual Atpl. There was no Iatra then. Anyhoo, no big deal to do them again. Good for review. The person you were dealing with just doesn't know the regs properly and is too lazy...

Re: Atpl question
You're confusing what gets frozen. The IATRA or both The SARON and SAMRON will freeze the ability to act as a co-pilot indefinitely when coupled with a type rating on a 2 crew airplane. to upgrade the license to a ATPL the exams must be written within 24 months of meeting all requirements for the A...

Re: New NOTAM website - old site withdrawn
If you display CZVR you get 278 NOTAMS, including runway surface condition at Smithers. It seems to be showing the NOTAMs for all the airports with the FIR as well as the FIR NOTAMs themselves. Normally there would be no need to search for an FIR as you get it with each airport. That's interesting ...

Re: New NOTAM website - old site withdrawn
The NOTAM format is changing completely on October 19 - with a lot more metadata added - maybe things will be filterable then? No new metadata yet. Here's a quick summary of the stupidity of the "weather" tab of the flightplanning website (which includes the NOTAMs). You can get only the NOTAMs alo...

Re: B1900 or flight instruction?
What makes you think you can automatically fly a 1900 after getting your ratings? Unless you somehow have a guranteed opportunity then that option sounds like a gamble (you got a family to think of..). Instructing however is much more viable in terms of finding employment and sounds like ur family ...

Re: B1900 or flight instruction?
Here is a likely a very unpopular opinion but you are not qualified to teach with that amount of time even though TC says you are. The only option is to go to the right seat and learn. Teaching a PPL or even a ME rating at 200hrs is fine if instructing is your thing. If you haven't figured out the ...

Re: New NOTAM website - old site withdrawn
There are some things I like about it, like easily flipping through GFAs and radar, but there is so much that is broken. Problems I see after just a couple minutes: - If you are going to multiple airports in the same area, you get EVERYTHING repeated for each airport. So 3 airports means 3x the same...

Re: Bonds
It's unfortunate, but there are still some people like myself that are happy to give 2-5 years before moving on. I could name several pilots at my last company who stayed 2+ years despite it being an entry level job on a single piston. That's why a bond doesn't bother me too much so long there are p...

Re: Getting paid by client to provide sightseeing in my plane?
...Also read enforcement considered somewhere doing this to gain hours for the CPL could be considered a benefit, and so a no no. On the flip side, you could argue the hours to complete a commercial are "incidental" as whether you are splitting the cost or not, you NEED to fly those hours. Cost sha...

Re: Carbon tax will drive up airline tickets
I feel like we'd all be better off if people didn't choose to insult everyone with opposing views. Not only this issue, but every "left/right" issue. I'm so tired of the half truths and fudged numbers made up on both sides to make it sound like the other side is stupid or evil. The last decade it fe...

Re: Carbon tax will drive up airline tickets
HUGE over-exaggeration there. I spend less than $2,400 per year in gas (probably closer to half that), are you suggesting 100% of gas prices is tax? 50L tank getting 500km per tank... 10L/100km or 1L/10km. 30,000km per year = 3000L of gas At $1.50 per liter that's $4,500 So a not insignificant dista...

Re: Carbon tax will drive up airline tickets
Well I drive a new big SUV that gets poor gas mileage and I bought it because I can afford to own and drive it. So if I decide to get a less expensive better gas mileage vehicle what do I do with this one? If I sell it someone else will drive it so there really is no less carbon emissions is there....

Re: Bonds
How about if the Pilot is having to work in conditions they feel are unsafe or is just genuinely been treated poorly by a company and they leave because of that, should they still have to pay the bond? I understand the reasoning behind companies bonding but it can put the employee in a difficult po...

Re: Bonds
...You lend them money, and they pay you back with interest. If you're concerned about getting the money back if you leave early, don't leave early. A fixed term contract is a contract, which is enforceable. You don't get any of that interest, the bank gets the interest. If you have to take a $10,0...
