126.7 can also be used in most areas to contact FSS for weather excepting again certain high traffic areas where alternative frequencies are published. They don't answer anymore on 126.7 except if you are very lucky. You need to reach them on the regional frequency. You can find it on the CFS page ...

Re: 2022 float flying season
Someone needs to fire up a float training program! With confederation college in Thunder Bay not doing the float training program anymore and the last 2 years with out anyone working through the ranks there’s just nobody out there. It’s amazing to see the job adds still coming up when the season sh...

with those times required and a plane, it will be an expensive monthly bill that I would give them!

Re: Captains of the North, what make you stay?
As many said, it's the lifestyle. I'm in the bush after 2 streets corner, perfect for ski-doo and moto-cross. Hunting and fishing are good and close. The word stress doesn't exist, you're 10-15 minutes late on your flight or anywhere? Well, no one cares. But it will be the same for your passengers :...

Re: 2022 float flying season
The industry is also changing, there are fewer 180/185/206 jobs to build your float time for the bigger machine. We do see a decrease in the requirement, I saw some beaver job at 300 hours float time but it's still a whole season full time or couple of season at part-time. And the lifestyle is less ...

Re: Buffalo Airways Boeing 737-300
I had wondered about ad-hoc passenger charter when I read this, but it appears to be setup as a freighter, probably a lot more efficient being twin engine rather than the expensive 4 engine Electra, they must be looking to break into some of the 737-200 market, lots of competition for that class. I...

Re: Instructor Rating Or Multi+IFR
I took the instructor path, I was looking to fly first and didn't want to do ramp for 6 months - 1 year. As said before, your multi will be cheaper by doing it while doing instruction. It's also building your PIC time that is useful later for your ATPL and some Compagnies (depending what is your tar...

Re: Northern Canada Flight Schools for CPL (Yukon and NWT) and Living/Working Conditions
Hey, I'm living in Fort Smith, you will find yourself use to the climate here, winters are cold but dry (we barely have 3 feet of snow in the whole winter). The town have lots of sports club that are very well equipped (paddling, ski, hockey). The living cost is not too bad for the north (around $1,...

Re: No more ME IR in Canada?
There are schools out there that can train you. The list is long and you already have a couple more here. We have a classic Seneca 3 with a well upgraded avionic. It should be ready in April www.aviatorschool.ca But as some already said, it's a pit of money for most of the schools and yes, you can f...

It took me 5 years for my CPL. It didn't help that I work on rotation for almost 2 years in that time and it was not my main target.

Re: Question about post secondary flight training and education
I would add to the pros the availability of student loans, and the networking opportunities. When you factor in the cost of living, it is hard to beat the Confederation College program. While it is possible to complete a CPL in less than the 20 months of the program, considering the weather in this...

Re: Move to Yellowknife?
Yellowknife is a full-size town, it's pretty nice, the housing cost is prohibitive but otherwise, it's way better than a lot of NW Ontario or north Manitoba towns where you can find an entry-level job!

Did you check the Cessna 182? They are still making brand new ones, and it would be a great choice for your grass strip. It's a bit slower but you say that you don't mind about the speed.
Cheers!

Also, all those minerals for the batteries come from places where huge pit mines cause a lot of environmental damage. Plus you’re supporting the Chinese communists. The amount of mining, transportation, refining (to make the batteries) etc makes these cars no better than a regular car. Plus where i...

The training site and the job site are not necessary linked but there is way more entry-level job in the Manitoba and NW Ontario than in Vancouver or Toronto area.
Go there if you feel good and then you can still move after your training where you want to!

We have a school in Fort Smith, NT. Winter is hard on the flight but it's a great time to do the ground and be ready for the spring.
It's the Terry Harrold School of aviation.
But with Alkan you will have a better view than us!

Re: IFR Take Off Considerations
For a private operator the only thing governing your legal takeoff is visibility. With the ceiling at 100’ and not being able to return is limiting in a CASS operation and would require a take of alternate but you could still depart. This is only in company, take-off alternate are not required (sho...

In 1,000 hours of instruction, it happens only once when I forced a student to do a soft landing in bad weather during his class 4 training, he was about to reject and I told him that he could do it. I took the blame but otherwise, I don't let the student go up to that situation, I will either push ...

Re: Getting PPL on a Retractable Gear (Insurance Question)
I've instructed partly a PPL on a Piper Arrow 2, 3 years ago, I don't know the insurance that my student had.
the insurance didn't allow him to fly solo until 40 hours dual, we had to rent (and do some dual training) on the 150 of the school for the solo. He had done his flight test on his Arrow.
