Re: CARs help

I forgot to ask, is the instructor charging money? If not, that changes everything. An instructor not charging money can instruct on his own aircraft, or anyone else’s aircraft, for any license that they are qualified to instruct. (Hint: follow the chain of definitions for “flight training service”...

Re: V1 in small twins

I raise the gear once there is insufficient runway ahead to land. Why would you wait for insufficient runway in a twin? People do that in single usually. On the piston twin I fly, and all the piston twin POH/AFM I’ve read called for gear up @ positive rate. Leaving the gear down just leaves you exp...

421.46(2)(b) shows the requirements you need for a group 1 IFR. 40hrs instrument time, with 5hrs done on a twin

Re: V1 in small twins

I’m not aware of any light piston twins that have a V1 speed. V1 would imply you are below Vr so still on the ground. Most light piston twins will have a climb rate in the 300fpm range with prop feathered and drag cleaned up. So with the gear down and prop still windmilling the climb rate will likel...

Re: CARs help

Thanks for the replies! 406.03 was the only reg I could find as well, thought I might be missing something. In regards to the C or R, it’s in the name of a corporation that we use to hold the asset. Owners hold shares in the corporation. 406.03(2)(b)(ii) is interesting, anyone can be a director rega...

CARs help

Hi, I’m trying to find a reference in the cars in regards to receiving flight instruction on private aircraft owned by a partnership. I know it’s not allowed to provide an aircraft and pilot without an AOC or FTU. I cannot find anything to clarify if a student who is seeking a rating, who owns a sha...

Re: Multi Engine Training Aircraft

Flight schools wouldn’t use those planes mainly due to fuel burn. Most of those planes you listed are at least double the cost to operate, and some closer to triple like the Duke. I did my multi in a PA30 I partnered in, wasn’t hard to find a qualified instructor, and much better than dealing with a...

Re: Incorporating a partnership

I used a lawyer to handle the incorporation paperwork for my aircraft. Much easier and didn’t cost much. Lots of people also do it online to save a few bucks since it’s only 300-500 to DIY it, but having a lawyer do it only cost 1300 tax included. It’s well worth it to own an aircraft through a comp...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

If your instructor: ... -doesn't brief, check your work or assess your threshold knowledge before a lesson ...you need a new instructor. I couldn’t stand the instructors who go overboard on briefing time just to go over material covered in the FTM, or ground school. Why even read the FTM if were go...

Re: Clearing Engine During Practice Forced Approach

You need to read the TATC case where Transport successfully prosecuted an instructor for low flying during a practice forced approach :-) I do agree it does depend on the environment. But around here, everywhere is someone's field, and it's really tricky not to pass over a person, vehicle or struct...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

Or you could just rent to pilots who are able to fly. They aren't that hard to find, even today. I rent my aircraft out to a couple young guys and it's been great. They add value by keeping the plane flying often and I get my fixed costs covered, in return they get experience on a rare type. Win-wi...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

I heard there is an instructor at Glacier Air in Squamish who lost his medical due to heart problems but still instructs licenced pilots (I'm guessing mountain training or tailwheel instruction). Transport Canada doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Similarly we have a private pilot at the local...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

Sounds way too complicated, and risky. Anything made from a rental can quickly be wiped out by overhauling a pair of TSIO/LTSIO-360’s. Probably why most places refuse to rent their twins out for anything other then dual instruction.

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

In any case the first thing TC is going to look for is who signed the Journey Log, as that person has to be the PIC as per the CAR. So the question I have for the OP is are you going to let the guy/gal renting the airplane sign the log book ? For the renter pilot if you want the time to count for a...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

I rent a Navajo on occasion. Getting added to the owner's insurance was no big deal. Basically there is nothing different from renting a single vs a twin. The insurance company will certainly want a checkout, who is going to checkout the rental pilot? I think your biggest problem is going to be fin...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

Basically If someone is PIC, that means they carry the can: they're responsible for everything that happens. You can't pretend to your insurance company that you're the responsible one on board, and that premiums should be based on you sitting up front, while simultaneously pretending to TC and the...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

I recall there's a TATC case about someone's eligibility for a float rating based on the aircraft owner (I believe) riding along during their "solo" flight time, for insurance purposes, pretending not to be PIC. The Tribunal disallowed the time and held that TC was correct to refuse the application...

Re: Renting out a private aircraft?

Well... One of the many factors to consider will be insurance. If it's privately registered, it's privately insured. If the insurer will even let you rent it, they would require each pilot to be named insured. From my experience, insurers don't welcome more than four insured pilots on one plane, un...

Renting out a private aircraft?

I’ve been considering renting out my twin for some extra spending cash towards avionics. I know most flight schools only rent their twins as dual, so there might be a market for people seeking PIC multi time. Would I be able to rent the aircraft the same way people rent their singles out but ride al...
