Re: Logging cross country

My schools 'rule' on logging XC time was that i counted if you needed to file a flight itinerary or flight plan for it, so 25nm or more . Normally our XC time was logged A-B, netting 1.3 - 1.5hrs per trip, but in the even that we needed 0.4hrs XC to meet a requirement, we would fly 25nm to a landmar...

Re: Realistic timeline for first regional job in 2020?

Im no expert, but this is what ive seen from myself and my friends from flight school. Assuming no wait list, and you go to a flight school full time, and dont have any major training delays, you should be able to get your CPL and MIFR in about 2 years (many schools will quote less, but those are be...

Re: Need help with the PGIs

Would using a laptop and showing youtube or other video clips be 'legal' in teaching PGIs to a student and of course I like using a white board and interacting with the student. Thanks Theres nothing in writing stopping you from doing it, and the feedback which i've received from my Class 1s is tha...

Re: Flight Instructors - What is important?

If you’re paying for flight instruction, it should be about you, and not how wonderful the experience is for the person you’re paying. You're right, Photofly. People shouldn't ever enjoy their jobs, or ever learn and develop from them. Heck, doing so should be punishable - that should bring them ba...

Re: Flight Instructors - What is important?

While i do agree that a base salary has influenced the FTU which choose to work at, there are complications when it comes to my motivations to stay or move on. A base gross salary for a regional FO, first year, can range between $40-45K. That would constitute an approximate 25-33% increase in the ba...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC

Side topic, where's a good boundary when it's recommended to contact ATC when merely just passing through and not landing on a class D? Passing through 1000ft above the control zone, will a call be recommended? What about 2000ft? What about passing through to the side say 10NM outside of the class ...

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC

From what i can see in every chart i have, you wouldn't need permission to enter the class E Airspace. However i would recommend talking to Tower or Centre in order to have traffic separation from the aircraft transitioning to and from the training areas denoted to the south, and from any IFR traffi...

Re: School Choice?

I went to the program at Western, and have met a few people from the other courses. Pros for UWO: - You get an aviation business management degree - Relatively new aircraft, with factory maintenance on the field - CYXU is in a Control Zone 'C', so you dont need to worry about other people cutting yo...

Re: Susi Air

You'd even make more money than at Susi. Depends where you work there and here. There have been plenty of captains making 10-15k USD per month at Susi (and some other operators) from what I have been told. That said, last I heard Susi Air was trying to reduce costs. No idea if that affects pay or n...

Re: Renewing Expired Flight Instructor Rating

Currently studying for the AIRAF, so this response is picked fresh from my notebook. As per CAR 421.66 (3)(c), if your rating has been expired for more than 24 months you will need: - A letter of recommendation for the written test. - To achieve a score of 70% on the AIRAF (for a class 3 rating). - ...

Chartright Promoting From Within

Hey, does anyone know if it is normal for charter companies like Chartright to hire FOs from office staff within the company, provided that they have a CPL and group 1 IFR? If so, do they normally require the same number of hours as an off-the-street candidate, or would the company be willing to low...
