Re: Flight Instructor Rating waitlists

My local flight school has recently started paying for instructor ratings, provided that the instructors then stick around for a year. It seems like a win-win to me. The school holds on to its instructors for a bit, and the instructors don't have to shell out $10k+ in order to get a minimum wage job...

Re: At least the Flight Attendants know what they are worth

Sounds like TS management may be gunning for the junior vote. I wonder what the demographic is like on the FA side. Also, does SD pay vary per aircraft or narrow vs wide body at AC? If the demographics at TS are anything like they are at AC (where supposedly the majority have 5 years or less senior...

Re: At least the Flight Attendants know what they are worth

A possibility is that the threat of a looming flight attendant strike during the busy winter southern holiday season in the media is having an impact on future bookings as people may be exercising other options in order to hedge their bets in case of a strike? Timing = leverage in negotiations. Whe...

Re: Pilot employment in their 50s?

Hello Just a quick question whether Jazz has hired pilots in their 50s? A lot of companies seem to be afraid to hire someone older than your “normal” hire. Thanks in advance and fly safe Theoretically they can't discriminate based on age. And given Jazz's current need for pilots, I would say anyone...

Re: Realistic requirements?

I speak with a lot of Air Canada pilots. 2,000 hour ATPL is apparently common for new hires now, although of course there are still guys with higher time coming in. Recently I've been told that 2,000 hours and medevac time could get you in the door.

Re: feeling a bit lost

I'm in a similar situation. 15 years of seniority into my current unionized job and haven't found the fortitude to make the jump into quitting the job and going full-time into finishing my licenses. The conventional wisdom is to get the training done and a seniority number at an airline ASAP, and in...

Re: Why do pilots keep taking concessions?

Canuckistan... Can't blame you...no one is even entering the profession anymore As much as it would be to my and my cohort's advantage if it were the case, I don't think there was really an appreciable decline in new pilots in the pipeline. For the past 4+ years I've been around flight schools whil...

Re: Air Canada 777 Damaged by Ground Vehicle Fire - YUL

The airline doesn't even care enough about these workers to train and staff them properly so that they don't get injured or burn out, to provide them with a living wage that keeps pace with inflation, or give them any sort of job stability when the industry takes a downturn, and there are people out...

Re: Crew constraints …

On my side of things I'm also hearing that flights are cancelling left and right due to crew availability. AC pilots are sending a clear, probably expensive, message by refusing overtime. I don't know what management's next desperate move will be. Will it be the carrot, the stick, or something nonse...

Re: Encore Hiring 250 hour First Officers....

Maybe I'm just naive, but when looking for a company's job requirements, I find it's best to look at the company's jobs website. As of this morning it appears that Encore's official requirement for the Dash 8 is still 250 hours (though with 1000+ hours preferred). https://career4.successfactors.com/...

Re: Pensions and Inflation

The original post was a simplified example. Indicating that inflation erodes buying power & difference between planning for a set pension amount 20 years in advance based on today's value. Oh, ok. So just stating the obvious, then. To try to squeeze some juice out of this thread for anyone new to p...

Re: Pensions and Inflation

I'm a bit confused, probably because I haven't been exposed to the kind of pension that's being described here. The ones I'm familiar with are: 1) Defined benefit pension. The payment amount on these is typically based on your 3 or 5 highest earning years, so if inflation occurs throughout your care...

Only did a 48 hour layover in Casablanca. It was interesting in the, "Hey, these markets look like a scene out of Aladdin" kind of way, but I agree with others that it wasn't the nicest. If you speak French you'll be able to communicate with everyone. If not, it may be a bit more challenging. Have d...

Re: YUL Base 747 bus

It's been a few years, but I used to take the 747 as cabin crew when I lived near Lionel-Groulx metro. In the 4-5 years I used it, I only had one instance where a road closure caused by an accident made me lose a flight. If you leave from Lionel-Groulx the bus goes directly to the airport without st...

Re: FTU Pay scale

It makes sense that pay is going up at FTUs, given that the time from 250 hour wonder to airline jobs is quicker than ever. Retention of instructors, especially more experienced ones, is bound to become difficult enough to cause real stress on FTU operations. On the other hand, depending on the weat...

Re: No Airplane, No Problem, says WJ…..for us.

I'm going to offer an alternative view on this specific situation here: WestJet found a proactive solution (the article said the bus left about an hour after the flight's arrival), they offered vouchers to make sure passengers could get food, and they got their passengers home on the same day as the...

From where I sit, things have been deteriorating from the top down in Canadian aviation since the pandemic. Re: Leaving current job I'm unhappy with for aviation

At 22 you're just beginning real life. I'm almost 40 and pursuing what you're proposing and I know of people who've successfully done it at even older. While doing flight training part-time beside a full-time job isn't ideal, lots of people do it that way. At the least you can start your PPL and see...

Unless I'm mistaken on what entails a "lithium metal cell," technically Air Canada's baggage policy already prohibits Air Tags in checked baggage, since lithium cell batteries (such as button cell batteries as found in watches and Air Tags) are to be carried in carry-on baggage, only. https://www.a...
