Re: Preliminary findings on number of VFR days in CYXX

Interesting and analytical approach, I commend you. First thing I would do is contact the school you plan to use and ask for their wx minima. VMC is just a minima and there's a big difference between 3nm vis and 15nm. i.e. my school it ranges between 15nm vis, 3000' AGL and 5nm vis, 1500AGL, plus ma...

Re: Starting the Confederation College Aviation program this fall, should I get my RPP this summer to prepare?

I concur with online ground school. The flying would not be the difficult part of the program. The combination of ground school, other college course, learning to fly and being away from home/college life young and single is the challenge. If you can lessen one of those loads you'll be ahead. Try to...

Re: ISO Career Changers

Yep me.

Dropped out of the flying game in ‘86, joined the military, uni and now finishing up a nice stable career.

Got my CPL now, starting instructor and will teach in retirement with a nice “supplemental” pension…

No regrets….

Re: Aviation Watch Recommendations

I’m a watch guy, personal choice because I like them. I own several “pilot” watches which I do fly with. Not to advertise what I do but as an actual tool. For me it’s just that, a tool. I like a large black dial, easy to read and that’s it. I’m still torn on using a Chrono, sometimes I do but most a...

So after 38 years I finally completed my CPL...haha Slight detour, just finishing off 30 year career with fire department and moving on to the next career. So 95% sure next step is instructor rating but just wanted advice/confirmation if you don't mind. Plan is/was instruct P/T until I retire then p...

Re: DA40 vs SR20

I fly the DA40 quite a bit.

Nice plane but with a family of four the payload isn't there. I'm thinking long term as kids grow.

I would second/third a C182 personally.

Re: A Career in Aviation or Law Enforcement?

While I agree with a lot of people here I'll share my experience. 32 years ago I got out of the navy, went to university and ended up fighting fires for the past 28 years, got married and started a family. About ten years in I seriously thought about giving it up and flying for a living. I didn't an...

Re: CPL Written Exam Resources

I did Harv's online commercial GS course. A month before the exam I studied exclusively Harvs, did all the tests and then the seven practice exams. 40% came from the PowerPoints etc, 60% came from doing those seven practice exams. I'm an older fart but pulled off 85% on the CPAER, actually enjoyed i...

Re: Average flight time

I think everyone feels this way when they start. Don't sweat it. Right now you're learning "new" good habits. Don't rush the startup checks, these are good habits to get in to. Learning your way through safe checklists, right now these are things you feel you need to do just to get into the air and ...

Re: mid 50's CPL advice

This is awesome guys thank you all For CPR I’m glad there is something out there for people to learn. It’s not difficult at all, very hard work actually but in certain circumstances it can help. The Vinnie Jones CPR video online covers it all and is probably the best I’ve seen. I can’t even begin to...

Re: mid 50's CPL advice

Hmmm... Also retired from firefighting, 27 years as a volunteer. And yes, I used Omega, and Loran C before GPS existed. We navigated Transatlantic westbound in a Twin Otter with Omega, and eastbound in a Cessna 303 with Loran C. But, I digress... Experienced instructors are in demand. To make yours...

Re: mid 50's CPL advice

I don't know of any succesful instructors that started flying in their 50s. That doesn't mean it can't be done, and I haven't met Gowyn, so this is not directed at him personally. I have had 2 older instructors, who only started flying themselves at a later age. None were really great instructors. ...

I am an old guy and my motto has always really been "do fun shit"! Re: mid 50's CPL advice

Which part of the country are you in Gowyn? Good instructors are hard to find, one that isn't simply padding their own log book for PIC time (milking the students finances.) The Pilots shortage will be back and Instructors will be in demand. Personally I would stay a thousand miles away from the sc...

Re: mid 50's CPL advice

I would go for the instructor rating, start to teach and then do the other ratings like INRAT ME. A school will love someone mature teaching GS, staying around for years. Of course you can go all the way to the Class 1 instructor rating. The schools will love you even more, let you teach multi engi...

Re: Anybody Joining/Rejoining the Airforce?

The culture in the navy, especially for MARS officers is very different from aircrew culture. Not saying you'll have a bad time, just do your research before you commit in that direction! I went in as 32U (pilot) and came out 71D(MARS) in 1990. I can tell you MARS officers were bred and trained to ...

Re: What are the unlucky doing?

Back in 1990 when I got out of the military I was trying to decide about getting back into flying or something else. This industry has always been tough. Way less glamorous now than even back then. Anyway, I decided to go back to school and ended up with the fire department (unrelated to school.). N...
