Re: Harbour Air
What a sad state of affairs. Could someone post the pay rates for translink in vancouver? I'm willing to bet it's more to drive a bus than a beaver at HA. The one company that can raise the bar with pay just chooses not to. Every few years someone speaks up and a 1 dollar raise is begrudgingly doled...

Re: Plane fighting fires near Cold Lake crashes
Loss of a pretty great guy, told ya how things were and knew how to laugh. I was once a little over my head flying drums in the bush and he randomly left me a care package including proper gloves, some Oreos and some steaks. What sad news, thoughts for the family.

"we need to know" Who is the "we". The armchair expert avcanada posse?? Youre too funny. Start a blog or become an investigator or wait till they investigate. It only happened today. Maybe the plane was on fire or had any number of snags...im happy enough nobody was hurt.

Nobody knows anything cause we werent there you tit-heads. Do any of you have lives? I really fear for canadian aviation the way people expound their gibberish. People walked away. Well done i say.

Re: Skydive caravan
Props on that last comment. My rant stems from the overall tone of these discussions, Canadian aviation seems to have lost any sense of camaraderie or mutual support. Its pretty easy to weigh in with our armchair non-knowledge of what happened and slam people. Weve all swallowed the pill that every ...

flaming flamers...thats all avcanada is now. Who knows what happened, if i were that caravan pilot i would hunt you all down individually and make you cry in front of your friends. I would imagine the guy feels bad enough without a bunch of flight instructors slagging him..i wish you all gear failur...

all i can say is "gliding distance to water"... live by that. There will be exceptions but after take off this is just how everyone should roll. You might have 10 mins added to your leg but the eventual engine failure will have you walking away.

Re: Crash at Brenda Mines on BC Highway 97
CAN A FLOAT PLANE GLIDE??? The floats double as a anti gravity device. If the engine quits the gen5A9 anti gravity sensor in the floats activates automatically. Further redundancy is afforded by a back up anti gravity failure unit detector with will jettison floats via explosive bolts if needed.

Re: Turbine otter wages.
Reading this makes me want to jump off the balcony im on. I made 5g per month at my first beaver gig and that was years ago. Even the big guys in Van are paying barely 30 an hour to fly an otter. Any company with any dignity should be paying at least 350 a day plus 40 cents a mile. But who am i, jus...

Re: Why is BC so far behind?
What do people think of lowermainland float wages?? The big guys pay terrible unless you can stick out the boredom for a few years. The cab driver dropping of pax prob nets the same. Everyone goes along with it with a big s@#= eating grin. Pilots take the risk and the blame but the profit never touc...

Great guy, kinda helped me get started. An fellow alumnus of good old Wabowden flying. Pretty sad news. Ill only remember his smiling face and his classic quote " if i stay at harbour air i calculated ill fly to Nanaimo 55000 more times" funny guy.....Thoughts are with his family.

Ive always wondered how much having that revenue seat beside the pilot may play. Yes its still a stupid mistake and pilot shouldnt be distracted but you know how those passengers up front are.

Re: Coastal / Mountainous Experience
coastal flying can be bad news, but its amazing what you can get used to. Crazy tides, swells, gusts, low vis, turbulence, snow, glassy water are all possible in one trip. The plus side is the weather reporting nowadays is pretty good, you can really make a pretty good go no go decision before hand ...

Re: when do downwind takeoffs become acceptable?
I think bottom line is to know your machine, know your load and have some limits preset. For a beaver for instance i know a lot companies stick to a 5 knot limit. There so much variance btw even individual airplanes (prop performance etc). Terrain and gusts etc should be the deciding factor. Dont pu...

Yes yes still within the staggering distance of the TI, didnt someone chainsaw the heads off the stone dog statues last year, im sure the locals and their overwhelming respect for their surroundings will have this in shambles unless Thompson can put a fence around it.

Everything but the flak - Martin Caidin.... Pretty classic book about the making of the movie "the warlover" taking 3 b17s across the atlantic etc. Another gem by Caidin (although hard to find) is "ghosts of the Air" its a collection of stories submitted to flying magazine about various haunted airf...

Complex problems here. Seems many of the "flying clubs" have gone belly up over the years...why is this? Did clubs make money? Im sure they were not cut throat enough to ward off college type and "schools". If the profit could be taken out and a club was well run ...where instructors are paid for sh...

Good stuff on here, my two cents: I see so many people rush like mad, give themself no time at all. The last post was good and also remember the tide. Best advice given to me was always have and out, have everything planned out before you do it and have a plan B ready to go just incase. Always be re...
