Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
I've used the deHavilland "barrel & ladder" setup and a third party LSTC, neither had any pumps associated with the installation. All fuel gravity fed to the main tanks and thereafter via the airframe fuel system to the engines. To "prove" fuel flow to a regulatory agency it was a simple matter of o...

Re: Air ambulance career
I think one of the provincial government supported operations could be very rewarding for some people. In Ontario Ornge is a career destination for some, similarly the NFLD government department as well. The Quebec operation is favored by many in that province. I think Saskatchewan has a government ...

Re: Want a dock the size of a warehouse? Call it…a new airport.
Abusing aviation regulations to build a big dock for a boat (at least partially) doesn't do any of us any favours. Agreed. In my opinion, if the fellow requires a dock for his floatplane, build what he needs, as harmoniously as he can. If he needs a dock for his boat also, make that an apparently s...

Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
How does the dump system work for the bladders? Ditching with full ferry tanks would be very undesirable. I can't speak too the bladder setup; I've only used hard tanks, neither the deHavilland drum setup or the larger fuselage tanks have a dump system per say you just burn fuel no dumping. Having ...

Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
Finally there are bladder systems. These are lighter, but every one I've seen requires fuel pumps which are run off ship power. They are independent of the boost pums. The system I used had 4 independent pumps and I want to say that 2 could keep up with fuel burn of the engines. How does the dump s...

Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
I can tell you with absolute certainty that the DH6 will hold 10000' on one engine at about 17000 lbs. I know this because I did it or I wouldn't be here today. I had to return back to PHNL following an engine failure on an eastbound ferry to KOAK many years ago.

Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
In a former life I ferried many airplanes including Twin Otters. It has by far the simplest and as close to fool proof as possible. Its a gravity feed directly into the main fuel tanks and thereafter its the airframe system that feeds the engines.

Re: External loads
If the airplane isn't configured "as per" the manufacturers type certificate or an amendment to it via an STC the C of A for that airplane becomes invalid  According to the regulations, the C of A remains in force as long as the aircraft meets the conditions under which the C of A was issu...

Re: External loads
Right. Why would you imagine that carrying an external load not in contravention of any regulation would invalidate a type certificate? The type certificate is held by the aircraft manufacturer. It’s hard to imagine why the actions of one pilot would affect type certification for the entire type. D...

Re: External loads
The only rules in the CARs are 702.45 and 703.25 (that I can find) - does that mean private operators and individuals don’t need an STC or approval in the TCDS? An STC maintains the validity of the type certificate without which operating an airplane, be it private or commercial isn't legal. With 1...

Re: Toronto Area flight school
I'm sure not all flight schools are equal but in general get as far away from the GTAA as possible, what she wants to avoid it transit time. Extended straight and level flying to reach a practice area is of limited value; time is money, her money !!

Re: Lets Shop at Home
Q400 seems like it would be a good platform for this ABSOLUTELY, it's very suitable. For the military I suspect manufacturer dispensation could/would be granted; if that's even necessary, for operations above FL250 if required for mission suitability. It's my understanding that a airplane operated ...

There is also this variant as well. It's not the first rodeo for the Global airframe.

When required "suitable" travel is chartered from "willing" friends with airplanes that are far more expensive to operate than a couple of King Airs.
