Re: UFlyMike..yes another headset thread
I have been using it, in conjunction with a QC2, on a 737 for the last three years. Every co-worker that has tried it wanted one. Excellent for deadheading as well. I don't know if it would provide enough sound protection in a louder cockpit, eg PA31. Probably ok for King Air or dash 8. Definitely n...

Re: Sunwing Air Only discount tickets
I work for Sunwing not AC but, I don't think there is any interline discount for off-line employees, of course, it never hurts to ask. We sure don't get much of a discount as employees. That said, if you are an AC pilot, we do have a jump seat agreement, it is absolutly free of charge and there is n...

Re: HELP! Telex 850ANR Versus Seinnheiser HMEC 46 ANR for B7
I use the QC2 in the right seat. Our fleet has about 25% equipped with a hot mike intercom capability. Of course the ANC headset, regardless of type I think, is best with this set up. That said, I don't have a problem positioning my UFlyMike so that I can use it with the left earcup moved off my ear...

Re: HELP! Telex 850ANR Versus Seinnheiser HMEC 46 ANR for B7
I used the 850 in the 37ng for a while and didn't find the noise cancelling quite as good as I was after. I've switched to a set of Bose qc2s adapted with the UFlyMike. http://www.uflymike.com A nice bonus is that you then have a great ANR headset to plug into your IPod or the IFE whenever you're de...

Re: Blown Tire...to abort or continue prior to V1
Hawkerflyer, you were making the case personal by your insulting language directed at anyone who might choose to follow Boeing's advice and continue a take-off after a high speed tire failure. As a gentle reminder, people flying 737s are going to simulator with twice that frequency, practising, as y...

Re: Blown Tire...to abort or continue prior to V1
It really isn’t our place to second guess the actions of the crew but, to inject some facts into the discussion, I quote from the 737ng QRH manoeuvres section. The quote is giving guidelines on the reject decision. It is important to note that a flat tire at high speed can cause heavy vibration and ...

Re: Procedure Turn Question
What was the clearance and are you in compliance? If you are proceeding direct to the FAF, how can you not do a procedure turn? Not only are you likely not at the correct altitude, you aren't stabilized on the inbound course. The exception to this is if cleared to intercept the IB approach course an...

Re: Actual IMC Log
Honestly, at the beginning of a pilots instrument ticket career, IMC as opposed to IFR or simulated IMC is very important. In the years that follow, it looses all importance. I was a 703 chief pilot for two years, I never asked anyone how much IMC time they had. I haven't bothered to log IMC/IFR tim...

Re: Navigating the CARs
As everyone mentioned, if the training isn't completed before the first day of the 13th month following your ride, your PPC is expired and a new ride needs to be done. That said, you don't need the initial ground school, training and ride. A recurrent is sufficient because your ride is less than two...

Re: SID departure and ATC
You are ok to turn as soon as you want in the example you gave. It would be rare to receive that clearance without radar ID but, as the runway is assessed as "1/2", as long as you crossed the departure end at 35', are above 400' agl before you turn and continue to maintain a 200' per nm. climb gradi...

Re: Straight-in Approaches
Safe, almost certainly, legal no. The above posts all bring up good points. Here's another. What was your clearance? Probably to the NDB in question then for an NDB approach. Though I think the airspace is protected, you are deviating from your cleared route prior to reaching the FAF/IF. As a note, ...

What is wrong with the current rule? We all know when migratory bird season is with us. What is wrong with accelerating to econ climb speed once above 5000'? Though many airlines may have a policy of 250 kias below fl100, not all do and Mr Boeing feels no need to add an airspeed limitation as long a...

Touch and go, To start, who is doing your PPC? Will it be a TC inspector or a CCP? Not that it really matters, you have only one correct response to most questions on a ride. Follow the published SOP. I remember one of my first rides in the Chieftain, I kept the mixture leaned in the descent to keep...

Re: do airliners employ heated brakes like some king-airs ?
Heated brakes are an option on the BE20. They are marginally effective. The 737 main gear may not have a door that closes over them but, they are pretty well sealed in when retracted and, certainly out of the elements. I only had problems with the BE20 when warm brakes were exposed to blowing snow o...

Re: "Transition Speed" from a newbie
You can read it off the descent page on your CDU. A couple of people seem upset about the different ways to slow in the descent to meet an ATC instruction. FMC's all have similarities but, they have detailed differences. I find the discussion interesting but, it would be better if you gave the model...

Re: KingAir 90 vs Cessna 414-421
The new C90GT has -135 engines flat rated to 550 a side. It doesn't temp out in cruise until above 20-22,000 if memory serves and will site right on the barber poll in cruise. Aquisition cost of a GT would be much...much higher than an older 90 but it does keep up with an older 200 in cruise.

Re: Lets talk about the Piper Navajo
I have read that accident report from Australia and as I recall, there was little to do with running lean of peak. There are some very good articles on Avweb by John Decon about running lean of peak. The process can be safely done in a Navajo but, you need balanced fuel injectors and engine monitors...

How so? 100 new people in reservations would seem indicative of a company that has more buisness coming in. 200 Flight attendants are only a small part of the number laid off seasonally when 4 planes deploy to Europe. As the planes come back, we need FAs for them. The 30 pilots are the last of this ...

Re: Fly your IFR route as cleared
I find it suprizing that the protected airspace, non-radar on a VHF/LF airway is less than on a GPS direct, at least until over 100 miles away from the nearest navaid. I just went through RNP 4 groundschool and the end result of that training seemed to imply that the centreline of two parallel airwa...

I feel the original posters pain, I really do. I don't know if regulation would help, it goes against my core beliefs, but I really don't know. I agree with a lot of what Headly and Cat are saying. FBO service in the US is miles ahead of what you get in Canada. In fact most service based experiences...

Re: Air France sues over crash
As Clunkdriver said, there is only so much room available and the latest thing to arrest wayward aircraft is a porous concrete called EMAS. It is use at a few US airports were the over run is restricted due to terrain. By no means does this lessen the responsibility of the aircrew but, 410 also make...
