Re: ATC encounters

When you request a flow time we are allowed to request your flow time no earlier than 30 minutes before your requested departure time, once we fax it/phone it in, we wait for the approval. On approval we alert the pilots via the radio, counter...etc. You are allowed to depart +/- 5 minutes your appo...

Sudbury FSS....I mean Tower ....controversy
So in the on going saga of Sudbury Tower/FSS?? we at YTS FSS just read two articles from sudbury news papers, here are some quotes from it. "Asking Pilots to Land in an airport without air traffic controllers is not much better than asking them to land in a grass field " - Carl Valitutti, Vice Presi...

Porter has been running training flights into Timmins regularly during the month of Sept. They come in under civil Ident, (GLQB) from Sudbury(YSB) and North Bay (YYB). and fly out to those two plus the Sault (YAM). When we queried them as to there planned provision of services to airports in the nor...

What about finding an instructor, or is there even such thing as a free lance instructor? I heard I would need to find someone who has a class three license, and then I would just need a TC Examiner to do my flight test. I was wondering about homebuilts too, could you do a PPL on a home built or are...

Well although I am not new to the aviation industry, these points are all definately very good. Some things I never even thought of, maybe the best bet is to save for my PPL and keep the owning my own plane alive for when I am close to retirement, can get a seniority bid to CYYG FSS and buy a nice f...

7100 dollars, the cheapest I have seen in the sudbury/north bay area is 9000, maybe this is just because of location. 3500$ after you sell the aircraft sounds like a good deal, I dont think I would be building for a CPL but I would definately be trying to build the PIC time required for a tow rating...

Best Approach to Private License
Quick question, I have wanted to get my PPL now for, but the high price is very unmotivating. I have been reseraching plans of attack for getting my license and I was thinking about trying to get a C150 (or similar A/C) with a group of people who also want their license. I wonder if this would be be...

LOL Touche. Very true good one, All I am saying is that I wish I could work half of the day, have lazy boys and ping pong tables for my breaks, and make a little bit more than the ATOS boys and girls> I guess I am a little jealous of the controllers and their contract, so much for Joining CAW since ...

Advisories and controlling are nothing alike of course, but I think FSS do lots of work for less pay so who knows It is true, controllers are licensed so they have infinitly more responsibility. I guess I just reall like debating thats all. I have nothing against controllers I hope to be one someday...

FSS do handle traffic!! Numerous occasions I have had 10-12 aircraft in the zone and you have to resolve traffic conflicts, we usually call this controlling using JEDI MIND tricks. "Are you able to come overhead for the downwind?" most pilots are very compliant and helpful but also they have the rig...

Bij thank you that is what I was getting too, I am a flight service at timmins CYTS, and I can tell you we do our fair share of sitting around at slow times (overnight, weekends) but it is usually steady because timmins slow periods corespond with muskoka's CYQA busy periods. In any case, after talk...

why not replace towers with fss
What about the towers like Gander, Sudbury, doing 35k movements or less. These low movement tower sites need controllers who make more than FSS plus contract weather observing. Replacing them with FSS would save tonnes of money. As to the efficiency I cant speak to that, as I have never really obser...

FSS vs VFR Roles, Responsibilities, Paychecks
Hello all, new to posting but here it goes... I just recently ( 6 months ago ) checked out as an FSS at Timmins, ON. (CYTS). My job doesnt ever feel that much like work to me, which I'm sure will change in time, and even though sometimes I salivate watching the G4's climb out, I know that this is a ...
