Re: Canadian Air Force

I am curious how the RCAF is doing in attracting pilots? With the civilian world offering much better pay, lifestyle, benefits and stability for your family, I can't imagine why anyone would pick the military vs the civilian world.Sure, you can't fly a CF-18 at Air Canada or Westjet, but you can ha...

Re: Canadian Air Force

I don't believe having a pilot license makes a difference on being select for pilot or not, unless one has a fixed-wing CPL and can be granted a Phase 1 bypass. The CAF selects pilots predominately on their aircrew selection results, and a smaller portion on things like their recruitment aptitude te...

Re: Helicopter hours towards regional (Encore / Jazz)?

It might be worth it to try to get on the Harvard in Moose Jaw for the remainder of your contract. Generally, airlines tend to focus mostly on fixed-wing time. I think you could probably still get on a regional with what you have for fixed-wing provided you get your CPL(A) and Group 1. However, a co...

Re: Should I go to Jazz?

At the end of the day, both AC and WR are in contract negotiations. I am confident that the Encore WaWCons will be improved significantly. I am hopeful that Air Canada's new contract will blow Encore's out of the water. The only thing I am confident with regarding AC's new contract is that the lega...

Re: Continuing to serve in the military after moving to the airlines

Thank you everyone for the feedback. Slob driver, thank you for the reference. I remember watching a documentary from the 90s featuring a Herc pilot doing a tour overseas that was otherwise a full-time Air Canada pilot, so that's what got me thinking about it. I just feel like I have more service to...

Between what you and Mobius have said seems like ideal base is the number one consideration. So I may just go for whatever is in YYC. Why do people “hold their noses” at the Q? I’ll be coming off small pistons, I can’t imagine anything will be a downgrade from that. The added wrinkle is that I may ...

Continuing to serve in the military after moving to the airlines

What are Canadian airline operators policies like towards pilots serving in the military reserves or returning to active duty, particularly as pilots? For example, if the employee takes a leave of absence for training/exercises/deployments? I know it's pretty common for RCAF pilots to leave for the ...

Boeing owns a factory in Winnipeg that employs 1500 people. I'm sure at least a few Canadian workers will see the benefits of this purchase through the supply chain. What is ironic is that one of the Conservative MPs pushing for an open competition so Bombardier could compete with their digital ren...

Started in 2007 making $24k on a Navajo, made my first 6 figure income in 2016 on a 1900 and made the most I've ever made in 2022 on a 737. Then immediately like a popped balloon, I went back down to $58k on an Airbus and will be back at 6 figs in 2024 LOL Canadian aviation in a nutshell ...

There’s two paved roads that run north south on either end of the Selkirk strip and several farm fields in the vicinity, plus even more mile roads in the same area, just look at google maps, it’s plentiful with forced landing areas. Even further, this pilot would have flown right past Selkirk on a ...

Things will change for new hires though (probably longer) with Swoop integration earlier this month, then Sunwing in the next couple of years. 100% agreed. Will YHM become a base? Possibly.. WJ has stated publicly that they will announce this fall, the opening of two more permanent bases. YWG and YHZ have been bandied about, but now we can add YHM to the speculation. When did they announce they were opening up new bases? I would assume YW...

"Madam - clean up after your children!" "No." What am I missing? You're missing the fact that she is 5-months pregnant travelling alone with two young kids ages 2 and 5. I don't think this is a case of 'I don't want to clean up' more than a case of needing assistance. It may seem trivial, but mobil...

Re: NEXT, they’ll have us clean the bathrooms.

I think context is important. A 22-week pregnant woman travelling alone with a 5 and 2 yr old is a tall order. I don't think it's anymore unreasonable for her to ask for help cleaning up then an elderly or disabled person asking for assistance.

Just my $0.02. I would go with instructing. Maybe look at doing your instructor rating at a flight school that will hire you after you are done. I don't know how industrious you are (you sound like a hard worker), but if you started the instructor rating right now and worked hard you could get it do...

Almost all the the big ones and management companies. Not WestJet or Air Canada. Porter probably still does because they do a lot of cross border flying. I'd imagine that would end when the US drops their entry requirements likely next month. Its listed on AC job ads. So I'm not sure where you are ...

WestJet is advertising a pilot industry afternoon for pilots with 750+ hours. Just curious if anyone has more insight in this. Is WestJet looking for possibly pilots for the mainline or swoop with less than the 1500 they are advertising?

Re: A read for all negotiating pilots - Even the Meter Reader job, which requires no education makes $70k a year!

That may be in reference to the pay scales compared to two years ago, as 1st year FO pay was 55K to start, we then implemented pay changes last year to 65K and now the most recent change to 80K. Comparing the pay rates from 2 years ago to today is approaching a 50% increase. On the CJ Captain side,...
