Re: Planned hiring 2025

Apparently that's what was told to current transition class. Going from 60 in 2024, 0 in 2025, to suddenly 400 in 2026 sounds optimistic. 0 in 2026 Elaborate? What do you know that would suggest 0 hiring? And why would management be saying otherwise? (not that I ever trust management 100%)

Re: Transat got a sweet deal

I also find it interesting how quiet this subject has been. There is hardly any news about this, and no commentary from other airline CEO's. When the Trudeau Liberals gave Bombardier a $372.5 million repayable loan, it was all over the news. Transat gets $380 million in debt taken off its balance s...

Re: Transat got a sweet deal

Regardless, Transat got far more than any of the other airlines, and that's not a fair playing field. Having said so, I can't imagine their current debt levels being sustainable either.

Watch Transat suddenly place a much needed wide body order thanks to their new ownership structure.

Transat got a sweet deal

Sweet deal for Transat! The government now owns 19.9% with $380 million in debt forgiven, with government loans restructured with no interest for the first five years. At least now they only owe $1.5 Billion instead of $1.9 Billion. For the record I think Transat has built a fantastic brand, and the...

Re: Delta bought some of WJ because the pilots are so cheap?

I've seen this stated before, but I'm not sure why it's the case. Why does socialized bidding save the company a lot of money? Why would seniority bidding require hiring more pilots?

Re: Delta bought some of WJ because the pilots are so cheap?

I've heard it before that if Westjet went to seniority bidding, that they'd need to hire more pilots. I'm trying to wrap my head around why that would be? If it's true that it saves a bunch of money for the company, then it should be a strong bargaining position with the company if they want to keep...

Is it for Sunwing Vacations since Westjet doesn't have the airplanes or crew to do the planned winter flying?

I thought loads were strong. Is this a new development? From the outside, it seems as though Flair got their sh!t together, at least operationally, in the last little while. We also haven't heard all the negative news stories as we were last year. Summer is also the busy season for Flair, so hopeful...

Having said that, imagine if Westjet brought in 787's from TUI to help with the summer flying, and 737's in the winter? :P

Re: WestJet Encore applies for LMIA to hire foreign pilot

It will be interesting to see once they add the Sunwing flying next winter how the numbers will look. Sunwing generally operated approximately 40 airplanes including a bunch of wet leased aircraft with pilots from overseas for the winter under the reciprocal agreements. Sunwing pilots would then go...

How does MFC compare to the Brampton iATPL? What's the wash-out rate? It's not for me, but I'm asking for somebody else and genuinely curious

Re: WestJet Encore applies for LMIA to hire foreign pilot

Everyone is hiring. Porter is running classes now, AC is running classes now, Encore has planes parked due to lack of crews Westjet is running transition classes from Sunwing but that will only be for 3 more months. Rumour mill has been printing that WestJet will not be hiring for the rest of the y...

It took me 5 minutes or less on the app, and the processing time is quicker on the app vs old school. My application was approved within one week of submitting it, and now I just wait for it to arrive in the mail.

He's been on the management shit-list for a while; they eve...

Re: WestJet to Layoff 100+ Pilots

They did not need to buy Sunwing, they could have hired those pilots and opened bases in YUL and YHZ and booked people at whatever hotels they choose to package with. They did not buy the hotels. They bought the call centres planes and employees. Ask Onex why they thought it was a good idea to merg...

It looks like the college is cash strapped due to a steep decline in foreign student applications, and the aviation program is expensive to run, so it was one of the casualties.

Re: SUNWING

95% of Sunwing pax are on a package vacation. It's a much different type of operation with less backup than an airline like AC. When things go bad, they go really bad. Also, it was Swissport staff that walked off ... those that bothered showing up when it was snowing. It didn't help that a number of...

Re: Pilots thinking of leaving WJ due to 16 year upgrades

Well to be fair, it’s WJ ALPA that forced the one-AOC and integration on the last CA. Sunwing pilots would have been more than happy to have been kept a separated entity with their own contract with a tail limit/no growth. You can’t force the integration and then be mad about stagnation… unless you...

Re: Pilots thinking of leaving WJ due to 16 year upgrades

Retirement? What’s that? The CEO said recently he has no plans to mandate retirement. They’d rather piss away millions on the AR program to avoid upsetting people. I’d say it’s best for people to plan based on the current situation and also hope for the best. It was 11 years before the merger, an e...
