Re: Effective passenger safety review
Folks, The "passenger safety review" in the landing criteria is meant to ensure that new and older pilots not forget about their "passengers" and is a simple and basic review such as "Doors closed and locked, seat belts secure". It was included as too many flight test candidates used to ignore the e...

Re: Why so long to solo?
There are several reasons for the excessive hours to first solo and PPL. Too many flight instructors rush through Ex.s 5 thru 12 and are anxious to get into hours after hours of touch & go circuits. The students, having a bare grasp of how to pilot an aircraft, are given a poor demonstration of corr...

Re: This is why I refuse to do ab initio on nosewheel
Colonel Sanders' advice is correct and worthy of acceptance by the training industry. It is essential to teach the "stick and rudder" skills from the beginning. When I was actively instructing, rolling on a point, coordinating aileron and rudder with any aileron pressures and landing straight on the...

Re: Multi Training - Shutting Down An Engine
In reference to triplese7en's reference to engine test flights, whenever maintenance or repairs are carried out on a Honeywell/Garrett TPE-331 an in-flight shutdown must be conducted and is mandated by airworthiness requirements to verify that the "negative torque sensing system" (quasi-auto-feather...

Re: Multi Training - Shutting Down An Engine
BPF is correct. TC no longer condones or requires that a student for the Multi-Engine Class Rating have experienced an in-flight shutdown and restart. The change occurred in early 2010 and was long overdue. Whatever might have been learned by the experience was not worth the risk involved.

On the subject of using Vx for obstacle clearance, both Cat Driver and Colonel have the right perspective.

I agree with the Colonel. Having good instructors is great leverage towards having more safe and competent pilots.
I used to teach the "one-wheel landing and roll-out followed by a takeoff" exercise. The students get to understand why good stick and rudder skills are essential.

Hey Folks,
If you have held an Instrument Rating in the past, it is always a renewal, not an initial.
CAR 421.49 - Renewal of Instrument Rating is applicable.
The standard is at this link: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... htm#421_49
Cheers.

Hey Fellas. TC is recommending that once the aircraft is under control and trimmed for a glide to decide where to land and plan that approch. If time permits, complete the other checks with the hope of getting a restart. Here is the link to the PPL/CPL flight test guide for Forced Landing http://www...

Re: Instructor shuts engine down for forced approach. Norma
Some of us at TC agree with Cat Driver in regard to in-flight shutdowns (It was a long and ugly battle.). The new policy in regard to in-flight shutdown, feathering restart and unfeathering for the multi-engine rating is that the practice is no longer condoned or required for the recommendation for ...

Re: Forward Slip
Adam Oke has it right. A forward slip out-of-wind, right wing low in the scenario presented above, will appear to be a much more dramatic slip but will just be an illusion of greater effectivity. Moreover, a significantly greater correction/transition will be required to land with the crosswind from...

Re: Short Field Landing Techniques - Ab Initio
Hey Folks, Hedley and Cat Driver are correct. Their technique should be emulated by all flight instructors. It is the best way to achieve accuracy for landing at a predetermined spot while maintaining a safe performance margin. A minimum safe speed or maximum safe AoA is the way to go. BTW, "without...

Good questions. The package of regulatory amendments that were approved in 2003 are in process with Justice Canada, although it is not on the top priority list because of a lack of legal resources. We may have to wait 2-3 more years before Gazette II and effectivity. The amendments will eliminate th...
