Re: Levels of Medevac?

We deal with medical emergencies on non medevac aircraft all of the time. Never have I heard one declare Mayday (or PAN for that matter). They always say something like "we are declaring an emergency (nature of emergency) request diversion to XXXX". On occasion we have also had medevac aircraft tell...

Re: Off topic: Military service datapase?

I served in both the reg force and reserves and am retired. I do not have Veterans plates. I do have a record of service card, a commissioning scroll, a retirement certificate and I know my service number. Having said that I would still tell some one that wanted to see proof of my service to piss of...

Re: Levels of Medevac?

My company SOP's state that were to file as a medevac even when empty. Apparently, the government wants the airplane to be handled as a priority at all times, in case there is another call pending. Stupid logic in my books, but hey I just fly the thing. I don't write the policies. And my company "S...

The current course in YQM came out on the floor part way through their specialty training. They started to be paid effective that date. They are now employees so when they go back in the school to finish the course they are paid and put on a 4/3 cycle.

Re: Your application questions answered - IFR VFR FSS

Ref the military ATC, not sure if I would say "totally different", just a "bit different" than NavCan . Same Manops after all. Some diffs I'm aware of, for starters, if you don't have a degree I'm pretty sure you will not be the actual VFR or IFR controller. You could be a ground controller, ...

After a career in the military including ATC, I feel confident in saying there is no equivalent to FSS in the military.

Re: NavCan Second round interview question?

I just had my second round interview on Tuesday, here in Moncton FIR. I'm hoping to find out how I made out, and if I passed what specialty I'm streamed for sooner rather than later. 4 weeks would be incredibly difficult, especially since I log onto my dashboard every hour of the day to see if ther...

Re: No Alternate IFR issue

We see this quite often with traffic from Europe destined to the eastern seaboard when the upper winds are strong. They file KBGR and after they hit land fall they recalculate fuel and refile in the air changing from KBGR to desired destination.

Re: NavCanada hiring practices vs the airlines

It is not easy to cease train people on OJT. They are generally given every opportunity to succeed. There are reams of paperwork for each trainee. They get daily training reports, end of each cycle training reports and end of segment reports. If someone is struggling with some area, they are intervi...

I think most places start courses Spring (Feb/Mar/Apr) and/or Fall (Octoberish). You won't find a place that starts in the summer.

Re: Aviation medical fees

Is it true that it's only pilots who pay a medical processing fee? I heard that even though ATC have to get an annual medical, they don't pay a handling fee. I sure hope this is false information. ATC does not pay the fee. On the odd occasion, TC messes up and does send out a bill. A quick phone ca...

Re: VFR or IFR

If you want to stay in Winnipeg, go IFR right away. If you go VFR, there is no guarantee you will land a course for YWG tower, meaning you might get assigned to Whitehorse, for example, and start off with a much lower ATC pay grade when you check out. You wouldn't end up in Whitehorse off a Winnipe...

Prolyfic I have heard that although there is no "experienced controller" program, NavCanada did recently take a controller (or 2?) from the military direct to Fredericton tower. I guess it all depends on the company's needs at the time. But again as others have mentioned, you need to meet the reside...

5 years? Your union sucks balls You can't move for 3 years after qualifying. That's not unreasonable considering the time and money that went into you. After that you need sufficient seniority to get to the place you want. For places that nobody wants to go to like Gander ACC you don't need very mu...

Re: Landing in a control zone at a place other than an airpo

Be cautious about saying that "at your discretion" means the controller has no positive control over the area. A lot of airports use "pushback your discretion" not because the ramp is uncontrolled, but because they can't see the area behind you so can't guarantee it's clear. We use "push back at yo...

if you purposely bring a carry on that won't fit to skirt around the fee, and unsurprisingly is relocated below, would the bag be subject to the fee. Seems a cheesy way to avoid paying the fee. Check-in/bag-drop staff are supposed to screen carry-ons for size. EasyJet have been confiscating, checki...
