Re: White only companies?

.....To give an example, if you are growing up as a Syrian refugee right now your chances of getting a good education are probably not as good as the average Canadian so it has nothing to do with racial traits but everything to do with lack of opportunity for one generation being passed down to the...

Re: OWIE at Deline

My brother-in-law (an AME) once helped pull a damaged C-46 out of the bush near Pickle Lake. Must have been 30-years ago or thereabouts. Would anyone on here recall the registration letters of that bird? I think it went to Buffalo Airways.

Re: OWIE at Deline

There are four C-46's on the register. Apparently, Buffalo owns three, including TXW. It appears that AVO and TPO are flying.

Re: Bush pilots love Canada Goose jackets?

The airplane shudders in the minus 40 wind chill. The air is so cold the howling of the huskies freezes in mid-air. It will be noisy come springtime! Standing in the arctic blast, you fondly remember your cozy time in Flin Flon. Your nose is about to become a popsicle, but the rest of you is as war...

100LL in Kugluktuk

There are now 15-drums of Avgas 100LL available for purchase through the Co-Op, though I don't know the price.

One of the few communities in Nunavut where 100LL is available.

Re: Licence Number

So I'm interested in getting an Aviation themed tattoo and I'd like to have my licence number involved. My question is does that number ever expire? I'd hate to get it tattooed on me only to end up with a different one in 5 years I guess the tattoo is appropriate for people who start a sentence wit...

Re: One year of being an owner

BTW, them look like some pretty sweet skis you have on that. How do you like them? They are Datum wheel-skis, made in Quebec. Experimental only, but they work very well, at least after I did some "tweaking' of the cables. Also I'll have to cut a bit off the bottoms this summer as there's not enough...

Thanks. Have you ever noticed how things (and people!) look better in a photo than "in person"? Shiny - are you flying one of the caribou survey 'planes that have been here for a few days? Here's what I counted at YCO last Friday (5th) morning, all on the ramp at the same time: one A-Star one C206 t...

Re: Recreational Pilot Permit

Since I was happy to fly day-VFR only, and knew I probably wouldn't need to carry more than one passenger anyway, I opted for the RPP and put the saved money toward my own airplane. Older pilots (like me) usually have no desire to pursue aviation as a career, otherwise we'd opt for the PPL rather th...

Re: Can a plane on Skis land on Sand?

On the way to Hay River one time I landed skis down on a sandy forestry strip near the NWT border. Airplane comes to a stop pretty quick. It just happened that the bus was going by on the highway at the time. I hope no pilots were watching! I didn't try taking off skis down - the ski bottoms were al...

I've not had a chance to peruse this entire thread, and perhaps someone has already mentioned this, but let's not forget that many Canadian lads were seconded to the RAF. My father enlisted at No. 5 Manning Depot, Lachine, Quebec, trained at Mont Joli and served in 578 Squadron, 4 Group, as a rear g...

Actually, Tamarak Inc. didn't post that, I did (copy and paste from a newspaper ad).

Just thought it might be of general interest given the popularity of that show, and who knows, maybe someone on here needs a job!

Re: Summit Air Buffalo - Red Cross?

In 1982, all the material for my house was flown into Coppermine on HPW. It was owned by NWT Air at that time.

I remember asking John Robertson if I could put the charter cost ($18,000 at the time) on my Visa - for the points. I was the first to ask such a question, but he allowed it.

Are there any "old" DOT radio ops on here?

As someone previously mentioned, put all that stuff in something that floats - especially if you're ON floats. A few years back I bought one of those soft-sided coolers from LL Bean. Guaranteed to float with that foam insulation and it is bright orange in colour. Electronic devices in zip-lock bags ...

Re: Why so little interest in tailwheel flying?

Cat, When I took my tail-wheel training I had a heck of a time finding a school that offered it. Eventually, I found Harv's Air and trained on a Citabria. It was fun, and much more challenging than I imagined it would be. What with all the home-builts out there, many of them tail draggers, I think t...

Re: PA 12 Super cruiser

It is Pipers finest airplane...period. I personally thought the PA-11 was the greatest Piper aircraft ever built. :D And for bush flying, you're saying the PA-12 trumps the venerable PA-18? I'm so confused now. I think the -12 is as sturdy an airplane as the -18. The angle of incidence th...

Re: PA 12 Super cruiser

I have a PA-12 home-built in Nunavut. Straight floats in the summer and wheel-skis in the winter. Look for one that has all the mods you want already installed, it's cheaper than adding them later. Flaps, VG's, extended gear and safety cables, Borer prop, extended baggage, PA-18 tail, etc. 150 hp ca...

I'm not really interested much (well ...maybe just a little) in watching the kind of flying that I'm never likely to do, starring people I don't know, flying airplanes I've never flown in or even seen up close. Ice Pilots comes as close to "reality" TV as I want to be. But hey, that's just me. I alw...

Did anyone mention that SPOT uses Globalstar satellites, which have proven to be far less reliable than polar-orbiting Iridium satellite devices like InReach? PLB's have no subscription costs and utilize polar orbiting satellites so, again, more reliable than SPOT. Nobody north of 65 North would car...
