Re: Air Canada YHZ
The mainstream media didn't report it so it can't be true? My logic is that the mainstream media will jump on any "juicy" tidbit they can get, so if they saw this and didn't publish.... If it was true, I would expect a front page headline on the local paper and leading the local news about the truc...

Re: Air Canada YHZ
Do you have information to the contrary? Were you at the airport? Is your friend the runway treatment truck driver? Were you at the Starbucks? Avherald seems like a reliable publication in my experience. Certainly no reason apparent to doubt it. It's on the internet - I like to know where something...

Can anyone comment on the reliability of info from that site? I just wonder where they would have gotten this info....

Re: Mandatory life jacket wearing coming for most seaplanes
Here's the publication for those interested. http://www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2019/2019-03-06/html/sor-dors49-eng.html It is weird that they cite that example of people drowning in the aircraft - if you can't get out of the aircraft, it pretty much doesn't matter whether you're wearing a lifejacke...

Re: Hot Air Balloons.
I think I'll try again this year to see if I can get a flight at the Sussex balloon festival... I'm actually quite amazed that there aren't more car accidents around the festival when the balloons are flying because a lot of the spectators end up dashing around in their cars with their faces pressed...

That was scary to watch - can't imagine being onboard!

Re: Hot Air Balloons.
I'd love to hear from anyone who flies them, too. Been to the Sussex, NB hot air balloon festival a few times and have yet to successfully get up for a ride (closest I got was paying my money and standing next to the balloonist as he decided that the winds were too strong and cancelled). Tough call,...

Re: Sleep is overrated
Great read, Piggy! I always thought it'd be hilarious if the glossy pictures on the flight college brochures of the handsome young, smiling pilots with their clean white shirts were replaced with real photos. Never did the regular freight dog run, but there was always lots of other midnight charters...

+1 for DIY Excel spreadsheet for me, too! I's not like Microsoft or Excel's gonna go away. Do you really want to get 15 yrs in with a data file that is no longer readable by your OS, created by a company that disappeared 5 yrs ago...? (Happened to me with a family tree program that I spent so many h...

Probably some transport Canada dufus was looking at his light display and decided to flex his might, being already grumpy that his wife dragged him out of the house to look at xmas lights. Maybe one of his neighbors thought it might be a good way to get him to quiet down by blaming the local pilots...

...No ipad can block the sun as well as a map... Haha - I was gonna say the same thing! Also, on a number of occasions I've worn my map like a poncho when the sun was blazing in on me and I felt like a Swiss Chalet chicken on its rotisserie (well, minus the turning part) When your maps expire, then...

When I started the discussion I wanted my initial post to remain neutral so we had a good unbiased start to the flow of discussion - but now I wanted to weigh in with my own opinion... Thank-you for your very well thought-out answer, charrois - I only have time to skim it at the moment, but find th...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check
I can't believe how stupid and cheap some pilots are. First complaining about a $55 medical and now about a vulnerable sector check which costs $30. The VCS is becoming commonplace in volounteer positions with children, get over yourselves. +1! If you are getting all grumpy about paying $30 because...

Wow! So glad that turned out okay - my heart really went out to those pilots struggling to control that aircraft for such a long time, and then thinking that at the end of it they were going to ditch it. They did an amazing job

Re: Skylease Cargo 747 Runway Overrun YHZ Nov 7, 2018
Agree with you about Halifax - the ILS should be on 32 imho. Adding a few thousand feet would be a good idea as well imho... Why would they spend all of that money on an ILS on 32, when the RNAV gets you down to 200 AGL? In terms of extending the length, they just spent a bunch increasing the lengt...

Re: Skylease Cargo 747 Runway Overrun YHZ Nov 7, 2018
Putting in more ILSs at this point in time would be as foolish as TC deciding in the last few years to push SCDA approaches. Pre-GPS would've been the time to push SCDA, and pre-GPS would've been the time to install more ILSs (not that I necessarily agree that they should have more ILSs). If operato...

[quote=Judging from the tire tracks off the end of the runway, it looks like the gear were all down Sure does look like that, but where is the gear?? It's 8 feet high. They must be sunk into the mud. In the photographs available, the gear is not visible. Was the gear DOWN? begging the question that how did all 4 get wiped off. There's an aerial pic in this article: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/halifax-airport-landing-747-1.4895103 Judging from the tire tracks off the end of the ru...

Re: Skylease Cargo 747 Runway Overrun YHZ Nov 7, 2018
Do you know what they're doing to runway 05/23? I fly in there regularly and I never see anyone actually working on it. I know they are re-paving some of the taxiways. I haven't actually seen the men working, just heard the warning of work on the runway prior to the displaced threshold. The HIAA si...
