Re: Exce$$ive ground briefings

Personally I have encountered only one instructor in all my time who I would say was knowingly milking his students both for flight and briefing time. Many instructors have been somewhat guilty of death by briefing, though a majority of those have been reluctant to charge for such time. If they char...

Re: Looking for a ground flight instructor near Buttonville Airport

Stop being a cheap sh*t. It makes me wonder what on earth the local school may be charging that would be more expensive. If I was going to tutor, I'd be doing that for at least $60/hour, to which if I needed to cover the full forty hours of ground school material means it would run someone $2400 fo...

Re: Looking for a ground flight instructor near Buttonville Airport

I am curious as to what people think is “too big of a cut” for ground school. What is Harv’s rate for online instruction?

Re: Aim to be a zero - Chris Hadfield

I would say personally that to be a +1, is a result of being a zero who, as you say rises when the opportunity arises. You have to be a zero of course to take advantage of said opportunity. Ultimately the question here is a difference of opinion on definitions. As an analogy, consider a line of play...

Re: FTU-OC

When did FTU's start paying instructors $70.00 an hour? Doesn't matter what they're paying them, that's the going rate that commodity is being charged for, hence its market value. Keep in mind that if you work outside the FTU its your job to provide all the stuff that the FTU's cut would normally p...

Re: FTU-OC

Let me get this straight. a) you don't feel that you're worth more than $30/hour more than a line instructor at a FTU and b) You've be giving away time at cost on your own airplane? Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought part of the point of being able to own and operate your own plane in such a...

Re: FTU-OC

However I do not recall mentioning any instructor using their own airplane. Is that not the main difference between TC and FAA that this is regarding? The requirement for holding a FTU OC is so an instructor can own the airplane that he is providing the teaching on? And I am having difficulty figur...

Re: FTU-OC

First I'll start by saying that I think the change to match the FAA's rules would be a good idea, in terms of letting instructors be able to teach on their own aircraft. With that out of the way though, I think it would make very little difference to how flight training is conducted in Canada. The a...

Re: Flight instructor "shortage "

I'm at a 705 and I'd instruct forever if it paid well enough to live. "shortage" Either a) you have forgotten what instructing is like, or b) haven’t done very much, and c) aren’t aware of the current paradigm of flight instruction in Canada. The shortage, as it is, is to fulfill the demands of the...

Re: Questions for certain freelance instructors

Well since flight training is specifically not either aerial work, nor an air transport service (as defined under 100.01) it would be a hard time making that case. But think of it this way, if ALL flight training were governed under 406 (which it is not as per 406.02) then it would require either al...

Re: Questions for certain freelance instructors

Indeed, but 406.03 applies only to what is considered a “flight training service” under 406.02. What falls outside, consists primarily of type familiarization. For example, there is no paper or rating to fly a ski plane, a flying boat, or for that matter mountain flying or tail wheel. Primarily thou...

Re: Questions for certain freelance instructors

No that is not correct. The only training that can be done is that which falls outside of CAR 406.02. Essentially if you’re training for any sort of piece of paper, it will fall under the provisions of 406.03.

small airports that is only used by pricks? I didn't say there were any small airports that were only used by pricks, only that to the outsider it may seem that way by encounters with some of the users. For example I remember one fellow who showed up to protest a young Eagles day under the guise th...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

Aviation is viewed (incorrectly) as a place for the rich, Its not hard to get that impression sometimes though if you hang out at a lot of small airports. I wouldn't want tax dollars going to a place that I thought was only used by five pricks who wanted to be treated like princesses. I've been to ...

Re: Lights or no Lights during the day (For small GA AC)

I think the only time I don't light myself up all the time is flying something with a generator instead of an alternator, then one just does so when you feel its most prudent. I tend to preserve the old nose mounted landing lights only when I need them as well since they have a bad tendency to burn ...

Re: Did we reach the next phase of the pilot shortage?

If the government were to do anything else, it would also be that it needs to encourage more kids to get into aviation, and make the entrance to it easier. From what I've seen you can get all the funding in the world to chase a career as a dancer, play the violin, or add to the growing list of yoga ...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

How do we raise this to being priority 20 out of 10, let alone in the top 10? Users of the airport have to sell it as more than just a playground for a bunch of pricks. They have to have more than the "it brings some burger eaters". For example: many small airports in this country that I know of, s...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

You put a mailbox at the entrance with "Landing fee 5 CAD please. Thank you". You empty it once a day or once week. Doesn't need to be complicated. Well that would be the simple answer that I've never been able to convince any management group to do. That said though, it still costs something. I me...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

I think that landing fees are a fair idea. The problem with the idea is that its only makes sense if the revenue to be generated is greater than the costs of implementing it. At many small airports there just plain isn't the traffic to justify the cost of implementing and collecting the fee, so the...

Re: OFC Needs To Get Creative $$

I should have said the market is small and shrinking as opposed to “none”. As usual, it also depends on local demands. Paradoxically, some schools may see an increase in business, as customers gravitate to where flight training providers remain. One also might wonder how profitable even busy flight ...

Re: OFC Needs To Get Creative $$

Ultimately there is no market for recreational flight training in Canada. As above, customers already feel that flight training is “too expensive” so raising prices to accommodate increased costs of doing business reduces business in an eventual death spiral of said business. As the current trend in...
