Re: Starting PPL - Night VFR + Multi IFR immediately after?

however this trusted pilot that made those recommendations seems to be very well respected and is a person I trust implicitly. There's your first mistake. Don't trust pilots, and especially don't trust them if they are apparently "well respected". Whenever I think of pilots you got to go with Obi-w...

Re: Turnaround time for first Aviation Medical

Someone at TC told me that my file has gone missing. This is TC's standard reply if you call before the 90 days is up. Don't panic. Call again when 90 days has arrived. Typically, if you do not have a TC file number yet, this is what they are going to answer. My prediction is that if you call after...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

Be honest now. First, its good we're finally clear that you think I'm just full of shit. But say a dozen times or so? I didn't keep track. It was meant to illustrate that when someone is first learning how to demonstrate or coach, which aren't easy things to do, they say things they perhaps didn't ...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

In 50 plus years of flying I have never ever heard anyone, (while flying, ) say, push the nose up. Can’t even fathom why someone would say that. Who knows why anyone says anything Trey? How many class 4 instructors have you trained in all that flying? Personally I've come to learn in this world tha...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

However I think the “sitting taller in the seat” thing is just being a dick. I assumed photofly was making an attempt at humor to illustrate a point. The point being that wording is important when it comes to giving demonstrations. For example, I find the most common error the instructor/student wi...

Re: 50 Reasons to find a new student

5) Don't bother with students who want to "combine their training with their busy schedule". Some of us have to forfeit our precious golf games and work hard to pay for the flight training since quiting one's day job is a risky move. Among adverse weather condition, instructors' availability, aircr...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

Sometimes the perception is not the same as the students perception... Uh, sure thing Trey. Personally I like to prepare the instructors I train with how to deal with less than ideal students. In the worst case scenario, it means I have to make sure they know when something has gone wrong, or to kn...

Re: fifty reasons to find a new instructor

If you tell your Class 1 instructor to increase back pressure and he "sits taller and pushes back in his seat"... maybe it's time to find a new Class 1 instructor? :D Possibly my favorite part of doing class 1 work. ;) Of note one of the more challenging things to do is purposefully screw stuff up,...

Re: Flight reviews by supervising instructors

That having been said, a student who carefully flies a steep turn at 30 degrees of bank, because that’s all they’ve been taught to do, or loses 400’ trying enter the slow flight regime (and doesn’t seem to care) - is that excusable as tough marking to bring that up? Tough to say without more detail...

Re: 50 Reasons to find a new student

To make more general the reasons to not fly with students, or in some cases to "fire" students, I use the following guidelines that I have developed over a stupid amount of dual given. 1) Don't fly student's junk. That said, it can be tough to figure out what is "junk" and if you're new to this and ...

Re: Flight reviews by supervising instructors

If I'm a student at a flight school, and my instructor sends me for a "supervisory" flight with the CFI, and the CFI thinks I didn't do very well - does that mean: - that my instructor didn't teach me properly? - that my instructor doesn't understand what the CFI considers to be good flying? There ...

Re: Flight School

But how does that have anything to do with schools forsaking Canadian students for those from foreign countries? Because these schools have displaced ones that used to serve Canadian students, or in some cases have been morphed from the old schools to a the new foreign oriented service. In a few ca...

I'm glad we're finally getting the bottom of your objections. I'm sorry I misled you to think that was the limit of my grievances. I can go on if you want. Re: Flight School

Flight schools at the end of the day are a business and are free to provide their service to whoever they please, providing they do so legally. Having worked for a few, I can guarantee that at no FTU I worked for, was a Canadian ever denied service in order to get foreign students going. I'm sure y...

Re: Air Canada staff will no longer greet 'ladies and gentlemen' onboard planes

The left playbook. Label anyone who doesn't agree with them, about anything, bigot, homophobe, racist, whatever. And the right's playbook is to label anyone who disagrees with them a communist, socialist, regressive, tree-hugging, snowflake, SJW, whatever. So where does that leave us? Strictly spea...

Re: Turnaround time for first Aviation Medical

Regardless of whether they're backlogged or not, TC has a stated working time of 90 days. Which is a long time when it comes to a desired compressed schedule one might wish for PPL training. The advice I give all people thinking about getting a pilot's license is get your medical done first before y...

Recognized by whom? Also what qualifications does it confer that your pilot's license does not?

Re: What would you do? Need help making a decision!

Just say NO way to any kind of a degree If I was to have the power to change ONE thing with aviation in this country with sweeping authority, it would be to de-couple the idea that you need a degree to pursue a career in aviation. Its my opinion this would have the greatest positive effect on fligh...

I'm not a massive Andrew Sheer fan....he's a bit weak sounding to me --- On this I'll agree with you. Unfortunately I'm predicting another Liberal government, the only change will be possibly a minority one. While a lot of Conservative voters hate Trudeau, I've yet to meet any that are fans of Shee...

Re: Recession incoming

That's all supply and demand Beef. But maybe a little more complex than that, most small businesses in Calgary also saw their property tax sky-rocket since the oil and gas businesses are essentially reneging on their share. So they lose business and their expenses go up, since the bottom line is all...

The Cessna has a more comfortable seat. If I never have to spend an hour in a Diamond again it will be too soon. Somehow they managed to make a seat that's less comfortable than cattle class in a crowd-killer.

It always seems that depending on your political bent there will be some kid doing something amazing that helps reinforce your world view of the right of ...
