Re: Jazz lands YAM with plows on runway
I fly scheduled ops to many airports in Canada, I've never flown to YAM. In my experience at other airports when the Tower closes communications are taken over by the local or a remote FSS. has this always been the case at YAM, that when the Tower closes you are on your own ? Are there any other ai...

Re: Jazz lands YAM with plows on runway
Mode C or Mode S transponders on the snow plows would generate a traffic alert in TCAS II equipped aircraft. An RWSL (runway status lights) system like the major US airports have would also help to reduce the risk of this kind of incident. All it takes is money. The infrastructure will not be in pl...

Re: Jazz lands YAM with plows on runway
Mayor: yup. Luck. But it is still the very rare exception rather than the rule. Is a comppete overhaul of how uncontrolled aerodromes are managed required for this? I agree it is the very rare exception. And I'm not campaigning for a complete overhaul, just playing Captain Obvious in pointing out t...

Re: Jazz lands YAM with plows on runway
Having said all that, when was the last time an aircraft landed on an occupied runway in crummy weather conditions and bent metal? Fair enough. However, in this case it was pure dumb luck that nothing happened. The Plow/Sweeper just happened to be making a turn at the far end of the runway when the...

I couldn't tell you where it's written, but in practice at my tower, have it monitored in one position only.

Re: Surveillance Service vs Radar Service
I was wondering when and why controllers changed from saying "radar identified" and "radar service terminates" to "identified" and "surveillance service terminates?" (mind you the odd, usually center, controller still says radar) Does this stem from the expectation that ADS-B will become available ...

Also means protect OT. Illya Yawn! Another one with full insight. These opinions usually come from the other side or from someone who has been CTd. There is no proof that this exists within either NAV Canada or NATS (my previous). Training is documented and a trainee receives progress reports and r...

Re: Communication clarity
Because the feeds are captured using scanners, you'll also notice quite often that the beginning of transmissions will be cut off. The scanner is triggered by the transmission, so if it is a short one, you might be missing part of it. For example, aircraft idents often get cut off - you might hear "...

Seniority Bid Question
For those controllers that have been around a while, what is the likelihood of the company and union waiving/breaking/making an exception to the "3 year rule" (penalty box) for new qualifications or recent transfers to let them bid to a different location? I understand it depends on staffing levels ...

Re: Landing circuit at a controlled airport
If I've cleared you to the left base, I would expect a call when you're on the base. I would then issue a sequence if I can't clear you to land yet.
When I'm issuing that initial clearance, I almost always throw in "report joining" or "report established" just to avoid any confusion.

I'm not aware of any rule that says you can't land if another aircraft is 6000ft down the runway. I don't know if you'll ever get permission from ATC or FSS to do this though.
That's the perspective I'm speaking from. We can't clear you to land in that situation.

Re: Landed with someone else on the runway
Is there not some rule for small aircraft that they can land with only a portion of the runway clear? The traffic on the runway here was 6500 feet from the threshold, I'm sure the aircraft that landed uses runways that are shorter than that. I know I've been cleared to land in a 206 with a truck on...

Re: YWG October 30 Testing
Question is this. How early into the training is that exam usually written. I have no previous airplane anything experience, so this is all new to me. I'm excited and studying my ass off but it's alot to get my head around in 2 1/2 months. PM me if I'm screwed...JK My course wrote the ITA on the 4t...

You generally won't find out which tower you're assigned to until close to the end of your basic VFR training.

Re: VFR or IFR
Same here. When asked in the 2nd interview what I preferred, I said VFR. When I got my green light, I was streamed IFR. The first course that came up was VFR, which I was offered, and accepted.
Bottom line, take what's offered, get a license and take it from there...IMO anyway.

Re: Stand by Course Offer
I started out with a Standby offer, got my medical and did all the necessary paperwork, and was confirmed with a training spot within a couple of weeks. Everyone on my course also started out with a Standby seat, they didn't offer any of us a "firm" spot at first. They seem to start with Standby for...
