Re: CYXX RNAV(GNSS) Z Approach
Here's what the FAA has to say about it. Presumably TC - which also uses TERPS criteria - says the same: http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/atc/atc0408.html The use of alphabetical identifiers in the approach name with a letter from the end of the alphabet; for example, X, Y, Z, such...

Re: IFR recency
I think AuxBatOn operates on a slightly different set of rules than we civilians do ... I suppose you could contact the base commander at Bagotville for clarification :-) Agreed. But I don't think the original poster flies a Hornet for a recognized military, and he or she was the one asking about c...

Re: Truly maddening
The odds are pretty good that a water landing, regardless of water depth, or distance to shore, will lead to serious injuries, and quite possibly death. This is a bit like arguing whether or not we should teach students about the considerations for water/tree landings, when talking about precaution...

Re: IFR recency
Not wanting to disrespect AuxBatOn's military training and flight experience, but does anyone else reading this interpret the CARs as allowing simulated IMC at the same time as looking out in clear weather for your own traffic? I'm quite happy to put in an email to my local CASI and get an opinion, ...

Re: Determing heading independant of magnetic north
When I took my CPL, there was always a question about the "sun's true bearing" and working it out on the given date and time from the supplied tables. I'm told that's now gone from the syllabus. Did anyone actually do that in flight? What did you do before GPS if it was overcast?

Re: IFR recency
My point is that the regulation is vague and left for interpretation. I don't think it's vague at all. I think it's completely obvious that if you're looking out of the windows sufficiently to adequately look for traffic you can't possibly be flying solely by reference to the instruments. I also kn...

Re: IFR recency
This definition is in CAR101.01: “safety pilot” means a pilot who acts as a lookout for another pilot operating an aircraft in simulated instrument flight; That's a bit of a give-away that a safety pilot (their words) is a requirement. Not everything is in nailed down in the CARs, though. It does se...

Re: IFR recency
Fly with no hood in VMC with sole reference to the instruments while maintaining lookout for collision avoidance. I do it all the time and count the approaches for my currency. I doubt anyone past the IFR rating fly with a hood.... I don't believe that if you're looking out sufficiently to avoid ot...

Re: IFR recency
I don't want to play the wordgame where we argue about whether simulated IMC "is" or just "counts as" IMC. For the purposes of training and currency, I can't think of a situation where the CARs distinguish one from the other, though. Where does it say you need to be under the hood and have a safety ...

Re: Motivation to Teach
I brought the topic here to be brainstormed and discussed. Well, here we are brainstorming and discussing. It's nobody's fault if you're not universally hailed as the new Messiah of flight training for your insights. In fact, if students don't want to be taught "on the clock" there are a variety of...

Re: IFR recency
Is all this really so hard to understand? Yes. All the regs say is do an approach to CAP minimums in actual or simulated IMC. One person said that you do have to do the entire approach in IMC, others have said as long as you are in IMC for mostly the approach. My example stands. If I am flying an a...

Re: Motivation to Teach
Maybe it's just because I have experienced the other side of the coin. With respect, no you haven't. When you've run a flight school business, then you're entitled to say you've experienced the other side of the coin. Instead of getting paid, I was given the opportunity to teach Marvellous for you....

Re: IFR recency
it's a list of conditions; there's an OR after the penultimate clause, so they are disjoint. Satisfy any condition to remain current.
Note the approaches must be IMC all the way to minimums to count.

Re: Motivation to Teach
Not so much "teach for free". I understand that someone has to pay for the education eventually. My issue is that students feel like they are "on the clock" so to speak. Alternatively, the student can realize there's nothing wrong with being billed when they need help from an experienced and traine...

Re: Motivation to Teach
Interesting.
Advocate piloting for free and you're accused of driving wages through the floor and betraying the brotherhood of pilots.
Advocate teaching for free and you're a saint who has to "be the change"?

Bladder tanks are somewhat safer in a crash, and leak, a bit. Wet wings don't leak as often - but when they do, they're really really difficult to fix.

You might not be in it for the money, but when you've run a business for yourself you'll understand. You are a commodity for sale, and you want to donate yourself for free. You can see why that would be an issue for some.

I quite fancy a new turbo diesel one. Do you have a half-mil?
