Re: Fatal crash at Stave Lake airstrip BC

I've heard much the same story. My response remains a polite but firm No Comment. Let the TSB do their thing.

Re: Flight Schools near Vancouver

There are no quiet fields within an hour of Vancouver. Squamish CYSE would be the nearest miss.

I learned to fly at Langley. Tiny runways so you learn to land properly. And adjacent to Glen Valley.

Re: Fatal crash at Stave Lake airstrip BC

The media keep reporting it as a 170 but it was actually a 140. I knew the pilot. :(

Not many, but a few.

You can add CZAM and CZML to the list.

A big issue in Vancouver is the terrain. I've flown in Toronto myself. They have their issues, but terrain isn't one of them...

If ATC are talking about me I'll give them a call and let them know my intentions.

"Traffic five miles back is a Beechcraft, they haven't checked in yet..."

Re: Is the Class C Control Zone at Langley Airport Dysfunctional?

Boundary Bay has inner and outer tower controllers. It's still nuts when it's busy. They often have both runways active: takeoff and circuits on 25, landings (LAHSO) on 31. This requires a single controller to watch both.

Re: Is the Class C Control Zone at Langley Airport Dysfunctional?

Class C in Canada is more like ICAO Class B: clearance for entry, separation and conflict resolution for VFR and IFR traffic. I've never flown in Canadian Class B, and have only ever been told to remain clear of U.S. Class B. Class D is radio contact before entry, full control for IFR traffic, VFR s...

Re: Is the Class C Control Zone at Langley Airport Dysfunctional?

Tiny airport. Lots of flight training. All the ingredients for it being a zoo. Boundary Bay and Pitt Meadows aren't much better.

Flying per se isn't an issue. Observing health requirements en route to and at the airport will depend on what province you're in.

Re: Favourite Type

I'm not picky. If I'm in the left seat I'm a happy pilot.

Thumbs up on the Arrow. I was taught to get out by putting my knee on the right seat then levering/rolling my way out. I do the same now in my Musketeer.

Legally, no contact required.

In practice, a courtesy call to let them know you're there and what your intentions are.

Re: Spin Entry Controls

When I learned to fly in Cherokees the spin entry was a power-off stall, then full rudder and up elevator to initiate and maintain the spin. Some Cherokees spun well. Some refused and would only spiral. Straight down at red-line speed is not fun. My Musketeer was originally certified for intentional...

Re: Choosing plane for PPL training

Correct. With two 200 pound bodies you can't fly with full fuel tanks in a 152. And since you're taking off at maximum gross the takeoff and climb out are somewhat leisurely.

Re: Choosing plane for PPL training

I'm familiar with the challenges of owning an oddball plane, since my plane is a Beech 23 Musketeer. Off-the-shelf components are no problem - an O320 is an O320, tires are tires, radios are radios. Other stuff can be challenging, expensive, outright unobtanium. Plus the fact that few shops have eve...
