Re: Soccer Team Charter Down in Columbia on flight from Bolivia to Medellin
When in descent it is particularly easy to mistake a dual (in this case quadruple) engine flameout for a dual generator failure, as the engines are already at idle and there will be little to no change to the flight profile as they spool down.

I paid $43,232.23 between 2004 to 2006 for all my licenses and ratings. That includes aircraft, instructor, books, flight test fees, etc. I'll have that number stuck in my head forever.

Re: Leaving aviation
I have often thought about it. But then I realize I like working only half the month and am not sure I would like to go back to a 9 to 5 job. I've been out of my original career for so many years that it would be an uphill battle to try get back into it. And with a mortgage and kids to feed retraini...

123.5 is an advisory frequency for the area. Each airport has a discrete MF frequency in addition to that.

The barber pole on a 737 is 340 KIAS, at lower altitudes, at least.Zaibatsu wrote:I think that'd be true airspeed, not indicated, since it's higher than barber pole on a 737.

Re: Villeneuve Tower Frequency change
I had heard it has something to do with the newer G1000 aircraft, the radios had static that made communication almost impossible, So Garmin working with Cessna and Nav Canada couldn't find a solution, so it was easiest to switch the frequency as 120.0 is a frequency that is not used Stateside ( so...

I always find it irritating how the media considers every diversion an emergency landing.

Weather radar
What sort of graphical weather data do controllers have at their disposal and what are the sources? When pilots ask ATC whether they are showing any weather, the response is almost universally "my radar is not very good, yours is much better, but..." Is your weather radar just based on primary radar...

Re: Personality a Setback?
I also hate social situations. I find them very stressful unless I have friends there who I can talk to. I don't enjoy meeting new people at all. I do try my best when I have to, though, and apparently fake it pretty well because I'm told I handle social situations quite gracefully. None of this has...

I've heard a story of a 737 combi being used for a bariatric medevac. The patient was allegedly transported while herc-strapped to a pallet.

I agree. I find 500 hours per year a comfortable number. That way the odometer rolls over every couple of years so you still feel like you're getting somewhere, but you're not being worked to death.

Re: Airline pilots don't know how to fly
This reminds me of last summer. I got a chance to fly a caravan, the very plane that once felt like an extension of my own body and that I confidently flew in and out of all kinds of bush strips. After now being accustomed to flying an airliner, though, I couldn't get myself to put it down anywhere ...

Apparently it was a typo. Probably a cut-and-paste oversight. No medevac involved.

Direct routings
A question I've often wondered about is when I am cleared direct to some waypoint way down my flight plan, potentially multiple sectors away, even across the border, how do the controllers coordinate this? Do you have to talk to each one along the line, or what exactly happens?

Re: Here is the Start of the automated cockpit!
A question I found myself pondering the other morning in cruise, after having earlier consumed three cups of coffee, is if the First Officers are next in line to obsolescence, and we end up with single pilot airliners, what will be the procedure when the single pilot needs to use the lavatory? Back ...

I agree with leaving him in the seat. Having hauled a lot of corpses around myself I how how heavy they can be, and I suspect they're even more awkward to move when not in a bag.
