Re: Needless steep climbouts

The Tiger Moth at Edenvale was pranged when the engine quite on a very steep climb out. ( $100,000.00 damage) The pilot was not able to get the nose down in time to get a decent glide. Not sure why it also did not crash on the runway. A draggy plane like that will lose airspeed very quickly in a no...

Re: Air Canada is in bad shape

The problem is the government is mainly just listening to health and disease experts, of course their goal is to minimize the health impact but they have zero responsibility to minimize the economic damage. In order for it to be properly dealt with you need to have business experts, economic expert...

Re: Air Canada is in bad shape

You're ignoring or not understanding the difference though. It either has value or it doesn't, CRA can't have it both ways. Also, as I said employee parking is not always a taxable benefit, again "scramble parking" or parking on employer property. Also apparently CBSA at YYZ... but that's another s...

Re: Air Canada is in bad shape

There are mechanisms in place to claim losses (for both a parking operation and an airline) but my point is that it is not based on individual seats or parking being empty. It is based on net operating losses, on a yearly basis. Having empty seats may lead to NOL, however, you if at the end of a yea...

Re: Air Canada is in bad shape

The flip side of if an empty seat has value and flies empty it's a deductible loss. CRA doesn't want to open that up. That is not a valid argument. Paid parking lots around the country have vacant places all the time and yet, parking provided by your employer is a taxable benefit and an empty parki...

Re: Steep Turns At Low Altitude

that sounds to me not like a slipping turn - something I still don't understand why you would intentionally do at low level in the circuit You don’t understand the purpose of a slipping turn in the circuit? When would you find a use for a slipping turn? I have to admit that I haven't yet found or b...

Re: More bad physics - turns

You can certainly define lift this way if you want to and if you're consistent about it, but it's unconventional, and I suspect it would lead to lots of unnecessary complications. Lift is normally defined as the component of aerodynamic force perpendicular to the relative airflow and in the aircraf...

Re: More bad physics - turns

By definition, lift directly opposes weight. Weight doesn’t change and you are not climbing therefore lift remains the same. photofly wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 6:09 pm You of all people should know the definition of lift has nothing to do with weight! Level or banked flight, has nothing to do with it.
In level flight, it opposes weight, as in, positive lift will counteract weight in some form. Sure, 90 deg AoB and you have exactly 0 lift....

Re: More bad physics - turns

The total lift stays the same. The total aerodynamic force changes. By definition, lift directly opposes weight. Weight doesn’t change and you are not climbing therefore lift remains the same. The horizontal components of the aerodynamic force make up the drag and also contribute to the change in ve...

Re: More bad physics - turns

What about the lift component generated by the nose? By the struts? By the vertical tail? None of these are appreciably affected by the state of flight controls - that is, for a given attitude and airspeed, they will produce a known quantity of lift, whereas lift generated by the tail is very much ...

Re: More bad physics - turns

Forgive me if this is obvious - but every illustration I've seen in this thread fails to account for the force of lift (be that positive or negative) generated from the empennage. It would seem to me that any discussion of the forces involved in a turn cannot be considered to be a complete argument...

Re: VIDEO (aftermath): 2 YouTubers Wrecked their Airplane during OFF-Airport Landing

This is a circular discussion, I am afraid. A Beaver at near max gross, landing or taking off from a lake or having to do a 180 because of weather or terrain will stall in a turn and roll, unless it is carrying a ridiculous amount of speed, which is usually not the case in those situations. If you ...

There is no need to recover if you don’t stall. That’s the purpose of a stall warning: warn you of a potential stall, before it happens...

Re: VIDEO (aftermath): 2 YouTubers Wrecked their Airplane during OFF-Airport Landing

having a functioning artificial stall warning device with Warning Light, Horn, and EVEN the stick shaker for a small GA aircraft (if feasible) would be awesome... the more the better for those who miss all the other stall warning signs. That is why as Transportation Safety Board indicated recently,...
