Pretty sure your employer needs to issue you a T2200 in order to be able to deduct anything.
CRA isn't super generous with deductions for people who have regular employment/jobs. If you're a contractor though - write off everything! HA!

Re: Guelph airpark (flight school?)
If you had your own plane you could likely get a freelancer off of WWFC to do your training over in Guelph. 152s are still economical.

Re: Aircraft tie down
Consider using lift spoilers tied to the tops of the wings if able. I hear a pool noodle can work in a pinch, but I've been eyeing these for a while: http://www.alaskawingcovers.com/

Re: Starting your own flying club
I've been interested in this topic for a while too. Unfortunately, I haven't found much in the way of resources and I've been too lazy to do the research myself. I think COPA should be assisting members to do this and the EAA has just highlighted this as an area for emphasis going forward. At this p...

Re: Parental leave and OT
Work schedules and benefits are covered by the collective agreement. Controllers (VFR/IFR) are represented by CATCA. FSS is represented by another bargaining unit whose name I do not know. The following is what I know about CATCA members (IFR/VFR controllers): Parental leave and benefits are good an...

Re: ATC Manops
MANOPS was replaced with MATS a few years ago (2016?). MATS has different versions for each specialty (ACC, TWR, FIC, FSS) which was meant to make it more user friendly. It's also a "living" document and constantly updated. I believe NAV Canada makes a PDF version available to employees, but I'm not...

Re: Regional Airline Pilot to IFR Controller, worth the switch?
The risk is that you don't make it as a controller. If you're willing to accept that risk after 2+ years of work then go ahead. In the YYZ FIR qualification rates are Getting better, but still low depending on where you get placed. The last national average I heard of was 25% of those coursed. Some ...

Re: GPS Antennas and Garmin Avionics
Thanks everyone for the insightful replies, I really, truly appreciate it. I've had a hard time getting straight answers and your answers really take a load off my mind. You would have to check the STC. Installing a transponder is Specialized Maintenance and requires an AMO. Is your AME working unde...

GPS Antennas and Garmin Avionics
I'm working with my AME to put a GTX335 XPDR in a certified PA18. This will make me ADSB compliant for flight in the states. This installation requires an externally mounted GPS antenna. I'd also like to install a Garmin G5 EFIS to use as an VFR artificial horizon (and thus do-away with my vacuum sy...

Re: Ontario float bases
Air Dale is no longer operating, so that base in Wawa is not active. Similarly, NV7 (Partridge Point) is closed as well. Hawk Air in Wawa is your only option there.

Re: Question about placement
VFR You will find out your placement once your basic course is complete. Sometimes, when you start your course, the instructors will have an idea where everyone is going, but not who is going where. I.e. There are 6 people on the course 2 are going to tower X, 2 to tower Y etc. In the Toronto (and ...

Tower closing has been delayed. Rumour is the tower will remain open until Late October. Lawsuits take time.

April in Indiana showed exactly what can happen when you mix fast jets IFR, slow VFR, intersecting runways, poor radio communications and no control tower to keep everyone safe: https://www.flyingmag.com/citation-and-cessna-150-collide-on-ground-at-marion-indiana-airport https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Re: Buttonville Tower set to close in July!
From the article on CBC posted in this thread: Airports require 60,000 takeoffs and landings per year in order to have a control tower, Singer said, though there are exceptions like Windsor, which operates in international airspace, and Gander, which is an emergency hub. According to Statistics Cana...

Re: Advice on when to apply to Nav Canada
It's difficult to build your life around becoming an air traffic controller. Between selection timelines, success rates and staff movement around the towers there are no guarantees until you're finally licensed. The best advice often given is to apply, and then continue to live your life (essentiall...

Re: Wind direction/speed in wsim practice questions
I don't remember the WSim that well, but I know that when I look at the radar, it gives me the ground speed. Does the WSim indicate ground speed? I seem to recall that compensating for wind, or converting Nautical Miles to Statute Miles was unnecessary also. I think it's multiple choice, so if you d...

Re: Survival Gear
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but for Christmas my wife got me a "Crashkit Charlie". It's expensive and something I would not have bought myself, but it sure has a lot of stuff in it. It's small, lightweight and watertight and fits nicely in the seat box of the Super Cub. I also keep a sleeping...
