Re: Encore's reference calls suck
Maybe I'm overreacting but there are peoples' livelihoods at stake. Sounds like the OP is genuinely concerned about the future(s) of a couple of pilots he has given references for. And if that is the case, then do the right thing, take a couple of minutes, and send a quick email to Westjet and let ...

Re: Encore's reference calls suck
Perhaps a quick email or phone call to the WestJet HR department might be more beneficial than an AvCanada rant?

Re: Part time float job?
I’m sure there is for the right pilot, with the right experience, in the right location, with the right company. I got my ass worked off one summer (up north 20+ years ago) and I would have happily worked 3 weeks on, 1 week off had there been someone suitable in the area to tap me out. I’m sure the ...

Re: PAL Pilots Joining ALPA
Almost everyone is paying 90k+ for 704/705 "lite" captains. Not unique to EIC companies. Perhaps not unique, but you asked the question and he gave you the answer. Maybe not what you were hoping for, but the facts non the less. And as for “almost everyone” paying “lite” captains $90K+, well I beg t...

Re: Hiring outlook
I’m going to guess timing. Why didn’t you apply 2 years ago?
Either that, or a bad recommendation from a previous employer.
Do you have an internal recommend. If so, ask them to drop by the people department and ask how your application is looking.

Re: Hiring outlook
Hiring has slowed down since the fleet stabilized, but they’re still hiring. And it’s not uncommon to see an Encore FO with an Aerocourse ATPL textbook poking out of their flight bag.

Re: Hiring outlook
It wasn’t that long ago that you had to spend 5 to 10 years in the bush doing hard time before you had the time and relevant experience to get into Westjet. Now you can slide into Encore with a thousand hours of day VFR Caravan time. It wasn’t that long ago that you needed 3,000 hours to sit left se...

Re: Westjet Mainline FO ad.
Every OTS FO who got hired after Encore’s inception knew the deal when they signed on. And that group is currently about 15% of the Westjet Pilot group.

Re: Why does anyone want to work at WestJet?
Not for free. And not without repercussions if your intended flight goes mechanical and your back-up flight subsequently fills up and leaves you as a last minute no-show. At Westjet, no problem, you are pay protected and they will confirm you on the next available flight to catch you up to your pair...

Re: Why does anyone want to work at WestJet?
AC doesn’t have a commuter policy and AC doesn’t have socialized bidding. The OP asked a question and I gave a factual answer why some pilots would choose to work at a WestJet. Just dealing with the facts.

Commutability & socialized bidding.
Living where you want to live and consistently getting a schedule that fits your family’s lifestyle are the two main reasons many choose teal over red.

Re: Possibly returning to Canada
I think you’d have to look at a move back to B.C as primarily a lifestyle decision. And remaining in a plane would be more for the love of the game (and some grocery, beer and gas money) rather than any sort of career progression. Perhaps like the GM of a very high end hotel in Vancouver deciding to...

Re: PAL
Not necessarily. Being an East Coast company, their pilots probably spend more time at the pub singing and dancing to live music while newcomers kiss the cod and get screeched-in than they do surfing Avcanada's Employment forums. I know a few ex-PAL drivers from a few years back, and the wages were ...

Holy shit! You’d think a guy would shit his pants doing that once and never back himself into that same corner again.
A very sad scenario.

You’re not going to catch any big fish without a line in the water.
They’ve probably got a bunch of small fish splashing around in the live well, but are still hoping for a biggie or two.
