Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
One should get on the ferry tank fuel as soon as reasonably possible. I ferried a Trinidad across the Atlantic for the manufacturer and that is what I did. As an example.....Use some from the mains(but not too much) to start, then transfer from the ferry tank to the mains to make sure it works and ...

Re: Twin Otter Crash May 20, 2023
I'm not sure how a turbine aircraft handles this, but I do know in every piston aircraft with aux tanks or ferry tanks that I ever flew, you had to make space in the main tank for the excess fuel returned to the main from the total amount delivered to the engine. In all cases, I think you flew an ho...

I'd expect some do one or the other, and some just one.

Re: Is JerryRig Right?
AvCanada has had its cranks over the years: there was the flat-earther with their bullshit about why didn't we, as pilots, need to keep pushing forward on the stick so that we didn't keep climbing out of the atmosphere; there is/was some dude who keeps cropping up with some BS about how the Wright ...

It is not a direct quote. The word choice was the reporter's. Major says transponder or ELT, reporter goes with "transmitter".

Re: Well Handled Incident thread
As far as GA aircraft go, this has to be right up near the top of "well handled". I've spoken to the pilot, Ed Wyer, in Dublin right after this happened. He was looking for a job. I didn't have one, but I'm sure he didn't have long to look.

There are no paid thought police trolls. With that cleared up, carry on.

Re: THE NEXT GIGANTIC ISSUE.
Covid is a Zit by comparison. CLIMATE CHANGE. Think — inflation. Flying for one is going to get a LOT more expensive. We are in very early innings of the massive effects of the world needing to adapt. Anyone who doesn’t see this is a fool or just not paying attention. Paragraph 1 - Absolutely. Very...

Re: Conair loses fireboss pilot ok
You are just lucky, that's all. If you ever have lost an engine in a single engine aircraft, your point of view would quickly change. I found myself in this situation 25 years ago and was fortunate to be Able to trade altitude for distance/glide. I'm still here to speak about it. Try that over fore...

Re: Conair loses fireboss pilot ok
I have lost a single engine in the mountains at less than 1000 feet from terrain. I’ve known more than a few people who have—both who I flew with and who’s planes I repaired from the aftermath. They all walked away and most made it to a paved runway… …as did I. Interesting thing is.. … there’s usua...

Re: Conair loses fireboss pilot ok
Using a single engine aircraft in a low level dangerous environment over forested areas is a recipe for disaster. No, it's not. I have hundreds of hours in single engine aircraft right down on the deck counting squirrels and God knows what else mapping fires for BCFS. Back in the day, we complicate...

Re: Snowbird crash in CYKA
You will always be able to find specific examples of incidents to prove the point either way. All I can say is the accident record suggests that there are many more examples of unsuccessful fatal turnback's where a straight ahead landing would have been possible than the opposite. I think that's an...

Re: Snowbird crash in CYKA
That’s great, until you realize that in a lot of places what you will hit, wings level, and under majestic control, is deep, cold, cold water, and for at least six months of the year you’re going to drown with hypothermic shock, long before anyone gets to you. In that sort of scenario an urgent ret...

Re: Snowbird crash in CYKA
The secret to surviving a forced landing is hitting the ground in a wings level, slight nose up attitude under control and at a moderate speed. If you do that you will likely survive no matter what you hit. I've seen you make this post before and I may have commented then, but I want to say again t...

Re: Fatal crash Port Hope
I saw somewhere that the engine was still running when people arrived on scene. Not many crashes where that happens. Supposedly lying on its side. Can't see that resulting in fatal trauma. Pilot incapacitation, passenger attempts landing? In that case, poor light or darkness maybe a factor.
