Re: IFR in the mountains

I big part of flying IFR in BC is breaking out and canceling IFR. Sure you could follow the procedure all the time until lined up on final but that isn't efficient or fun. A little experience in the rocks can keep you out of trouble and give your passengers a smoother ride. The lighter and less powe...

Re: When to pull the plug on the Aviation career?

I thought about pulling the plug once, when I was working for a crappy employer and just had become a dad but I figured out that I just needed to do a different kind of flying for awhile to get the excitement back. When I seriously thought about doing a non flying job I realized I don't really do wh...

Re: Second time around

Hasn't been brutal for me. Over 20 years at it. Mainly bush flying all over the place. Couldn't imagine going to work at an office, although some bad weather days I wish I could have been a dispatcher for the day instead of a pilot. Worked for a few companies that didn't work out but in the most par...

Re: Advice on this future career

Go for it, no problem in your 30's, you could still have 30 years of employment ahead of you and should be able to accomplish most of your goals in that time I should think.

It's kind of like playing the lottery, you can't win unless you play.

Never forget, I agree on that. Feel free to make your own decision on what you won't forget.

Re: ATAC Blacklist?

I've quit a couple "bad" companies and it hasn't effected my career at all. I might have been worried about money for a bit but it always worked out better to leave. I've been asked at interviews to explain if I ever left a job under bad terms. Yes I have I said and made the explanation short and sw...

Re: Not Ice Pilots--for sure

Well I'd watch it, probably a little corney but what show on aviation isn't? Got some cool landing spots and a takeoff down hill on a country road with a pretty girl along, who wouldn't want to do that.

Re: Best Float Flying Read

I agree with all of the above - also - Wings of the North by Dick Turner And "Arctic Pilot" by Walter Gilbert - this book was written in 1939 about the flying he did up north in 1931. Good luck finding it but its a gem. The pages are almost 1/8 of an inch thick. Its fun to read as not much has chang...

Re: Best Beaver mods

Baron STOL? Not too impressed for the cost. The upgross is only for fuel in the tip tanks as far as I remember - nice for long trips though.

Re: Floatplane Safety Video

That would make more sense CD, I do remember though seeing a 206 pull up with a Transport guy inside wearing a yellow pouch type life jacket a number of years back. He also shut down and attached the ropes to the floats before docking (as an extra precaution with it being an amphib), something I'd n...

Re: Floatplane Safety Video

The life jackets don't have to be sealed to be legal. You can put them in zip lock bags with the tag inside or have them stamped. Doing this gives passengers the option not to feel bad when wanting to have the jacket on. Transport Canada wears them and they are not in a sealed bag before each flight.

Re: Floatplane Safety Video

One thing I do is try to educate the public knowing they will talk to their friends and some safety tips will travel by word of mouth. Today I was talking to a fellow I met at a birthday party and he was telling me of a scary return flight he had from Victoria Harbour to Vancouver. He told his compa...

Re: Is this greasy?

You are doing the right thing. The new job will come. Don't ever bad mouth the company you are working for even if things aren't that great - perhaps they aren't bad but understandability you want some different experience and that is why you'd like to work for your next employer. Nothing wrong with...

If you use fltplan.com (free) for planning it will show you the routes that other pilots filed for your same trip as well as the routes that were given recently from ATC. Very handy.

KIP,

Hunting is very popular during the fall months with the area being noted for the record-size mule deer also moose, elk, black bear, grouse. There are MANY logging roads that go in all directions to take you to interesting destinations.

Re: Princeton B.C.

Princeton is a great place to live if you like fishing, hunting, off roading/motorbiking, etc. Beautiful spot. I second everything Wilbur said. I also agree the valley route from Summerland is better than going via Keromeos if unfamiliar with the area. The 172 will be fine there if not taken out in ...
