Re: Flight Instructor Rating
The point I am making is that there's no point doing an instructor rating unless you have a job at an FTU lined up . I don't know how I can make it more clearly... ...Lots of people think that having an instructor rating would be cool, and they can boast about it to their friends and women in bars,...

Re: Flight Instructor Rating
If you're a class IV instructor without a job, you are totally useless. I'm sorry if that hurts some people's feelings. Unless you have a plan to get a job, there's no point getting the rating. I loved having Class 4's who would do the grunt work of endless circuits for me, And we wonder why it tak...

Re: Flight Instructor Rating
What are you going to do after you get the rating? As a Class IV instructor, you're pretty much useless: you can't do anything on your own, you have to be supervised by and work for a Flight Training Unit. Is that your plan? You don't have to discuss it here, but you should know what it is. Dude.. ...

I don't really have one, but I enjoyed Flyboys, even if it was a little cheesy at times.

Re: Alternate Minima and ETAs
I’ve never heard of FIC caring either way what was filed... It’s up to you... That's what made it awkward. They did care. They didn't want to file our alternate. It's up to us for sure, but the question of how much trouble it's worth to tell them to stuff it, verses just choosing an alternate that'...

Alternate Minima and ETAs
We had a weird scenario today when filing a flight plan by telephone. FIC indicated to us that our alternate airport did not meet the legal minima because it was still below minimums at the time of arrival... at our destination. If we did a missed approach at the destination and flew the 2 hours bac...

Re: Be wary of the accuracy of the logbook
Regarding snags, I don't hesitate to snag what I feel is unsafe. If I'm not sure, I'll first contact maintenance to hear their thoughts before writing it up. If they didn't think it was a problem, but I still did, I would write it up anyways. That doesn't happen often, and even if they pushed back,...

Re: Looking back at the airspeed should be instinctive
I've read more than I care to about airspeed v/s pitch and bank turning final.. blah blah blah.. I think we are more or less on the same page here with that. A big issue I see is distraction in general. You don't know your attitude if you're not paying attention to it, nor your airspeed. Base to fin...

Re: Be wary of the accuracy of the logbook
I ran into this dilemma all. the. time. when I was instructing: An instructor would come up to me and be like, "Hey I know you have this aircraft next, so I wasn't gonna snag it so you'd lose your flight, but I'll let you make the call. The engine was doing that random back-firing thing again for a ...

I wished I knew how to self-study when I first started, as well as how to manage money.

Taken from the Q&A thingy below the description: "To the person asking about it being put back into flying condition by students; I am an A&P/IA and former instructor at another school. School aircraft have been taken apart and put back together so many times the bolt holes are worn out. Even the be...

Re: Minimize planning flights where cancellation causes great disappointment
Great advice. I wonder how many incidents were caused because of the pressure of not disappointing your friends. Thankfully I have avoided most of that pressure over the years at the cost of sounding like a total wet-blanket. When friends come to me like, "Hey you can fly! Can you fly us to ..." I o...

Re: Need Advice
Only a year and a half? That's not too bad. The requirements for getting current are in the CARS, but if it's been less than 2 years, I don't think there's much you need to do to be airworthy again. Besides that, you could always do some practice exams with a program like NIZUS to get back up to spe...

Re: Accomodating ATC
There's so many amazing controllers across Canada, and I've really enjoyed working for years with some of them. Some of my favourites experiences have been in Edmonton, Sydney, Yarmouth, Halifax, Winnipeg, Fredericton, to name a few. The only one that wasn't great was this one particular FSS operato...

Re: I Always Wondered About the Arrow Manual Gear Extension
Interesting. I wonder if the hydraulic pressure was holding the gear up and was not able to be released. Not familiar with the Arrow, but I've done manual gear extensions in every type I've flown for practice or necessity. If it has a pressure release valve like the Seminole, perhaps it wasn't pulle...

Re: Has anybody given up?
I totally understand people that think flying might not be worth it and I recognize the legitimate mental health strain that comes from chasing the "dream." I don't think they're entitled, but rather that they are carefully weighing the costs and the gains. It took me nearly 8 years to get up to my ...
