Re: Twin otter on the ice

Sounds like a Station 60 to me. The one significant weakness to an otherwise extremely robust bush plane. Not sure if it was a factor in this case but as others have mentioned, landing on unproven snow or ice in flat light is not without considerable risk. Overcast conditions make recognizing the si...

WestJet is in trouble. Is becoming more like Air Canada the fix?

Accurate and concise article regarding WestJet's recent turmoil and the challenges it faces going forward.

TL/DR: WestJet is trying to do too much all at once.

Re: Random Q400 tips

I loved flying the Q. The autopilot can be a little aggressive though. Its parameters are often outside those of passenger comfort. For example, when intercepting a vertical descent, arming the VNAV typically causes a brief but noticeable pitch down. To smooth this out I was taught to start in VS. a...

Re: Encore contract negotiations

A number of people here don't fully appreciate the subject at hand. Flow and the One List are not the same thing. Flow is the preferential hiring of Encore pilots at WestJet. It is a hiring ratio with no bearing on the larger seniority list. Flow, though different, equal in importance to the One Lis...

Re: Encore contract negotiations

The one list is dead. The sooner Encore pilots recognize that fact, and act accordingly, the better off they'll be. Both MEC's may very well want the one list to succeed but the company is dragging their feet... why? Because negotiations with Encore pilots is about to get a whole lot more strenuous ...

Re: Air Canada vs American Airlines A320

The only grain of salt to keep in mind when drooling over those numbers is health insurance. It can be quite expensive. That being said I'd jump at the chance to live and work in the US. Better pay, lower taxes, affordable real estate, lower cost of living. Near zero fees for personal travel. Austin...

pressure on pilot pay it is also a substantial headwind at a time when airlines are having a hard time raising revenues, especially coupled with rising fuel costs. The obvious solution is looking for alternatives. While I dont doubt the pilot shortage will push the industry toward increasing automa...

Re: How's morale with uncertainty of the one list?

Keep going Weed Pro...not all pilots want the one list. I know myself and all the off the street direct hires don’t. When I was hired my hiring package was dated 2009 and no where was their mention of a combined list. After 4 + years at WestJet my class still has 14 unflowed Encore pilots ahead of ...

Re: Air Canada and Westjet...what a joke

I can't think of a single case where a pilot came to work stoned. The pilot of the Tindi Caravan crash in 2011 had THC in his system. TSB pointed to his "impairment" as a principle cause. Personally I think that's debatable since he was known to be a regular consumer (thereby increasing his toleran...

Re: SWOOP OTS Captains punted from left seat...

Further, the existing Swoop OTS pilots are ahead of any Encore pilots who eventually will flow to WJ mainline. Incorrect. The OTS Swoop pilots hold seniority based on their date of hire on the WPDL. The flow through agreement between WestJet and Encore is currently frozen and will most certainly be...

Re: Cannabis Policy ???

A not so surprising response considering there is currently no suitable means to prove impairment or any guidelines for them to fall back on. TC, as usual, has been completely absent in providing any sort of progressive, thoughtful leadership. Cannabis will be legal in less than a month and it stand...

While on the subject of nitpicking... Can we please stop saying "sit back, relax, and enjoy the WestJet hospitality!" - It's terribly cliché. In case you haven't noticed, there is no more "sitting back". There is no "relaxing". Everyone is sitting upright, tightly packed, and stuck listening to babi...

Re: Well that didn’t take long for Swoop FA’s to unionize

That's all very sensible aerobod but that still doesn't rectify the fact that Swoop is using WestJet resources to operate. I know plenty of people in other mainline departments now taking on Swoop work. As JJJ mentioned, as long as Swoop is contracting services from the parent company for pennies on...
