How bad has insurance for float operators gotten? I have seen many references to higher rates at renewal, but nothing about insurance wanting more experience.

Re: Remote Air Strip
That's what I suspected for the USFS Twin Otter, but then the North Cariboo one landing at Prairie Creek mine had a door off as well and smokejumpers from that plane in that location seems less likely.

What is the benefit of flying a Twin Otter without one of the rear doors (in both of the last two videos)?

Re: Info Request: Hearing Loss - DHC-2 Beaver & DHC-3 Otter
I considered that, but after reading a critique of the Clarity Aloft I am not certain if that is as useful as it sounds. It seems that earplugs do not provide the same protection as ear muffs/a passive headset because vibrations still reach the ear with ear plugs whereas they are absorbed/blocked by...

Re: Info Request: Hearing Loss - DHC-2 Beaver & DHC-3 Otter
I have used a Telex 50D in Twin Otters, but not Beavers or Otters. It is an older headset, clunky, heavy, and I do not think the ANR is as good as the newer headsets, but it is comparable to a passive David Clark without power. My experience with their customer service has been bearable but not grea...

Re: Gas guzzling trudeau plane
If they really cared about reducing greenhouse gas emissions they would sit in Ottawa or at home and do their entire campaign online or by phone. Come to think of it, they should sit in their home (in their ridings) to conduct their entire job by teleconference and reduce emissions from trips back a...

Not up on the latest, but mini iPads without cellular used to not have A n-built GPS so you needed an external antenna to get position information.

Re: Seaplane down with seven on board.
I have not flown lots of 185s but all of the POHs I have seen (late models) had the third row of seating in the W&B section. I never saw mention of belts for more than two people, the seat belt attach points were always by the walls and on centerline. I used the third row on occasion flying one plan...

Well cbc is running the standard " rickety old airplane story" https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/dwayne-winsor-de-havilland-beaver-air-saguenay-mistastin-lake-1.5219517 I worked with a company that ran a PC6, bloody thing was always in the shop, they replaced it with a turbo beav...

Re: Boeing's "Battle over blame": reduce power or not?
Just to be clear, I was referencing the annotated FDR readout from avherald. The manual cable trim is not recorded. There is automatic pitch trim that is commanded by software (including MCAS) using the electric trim, manual (electric) pitch trim that is the pilot commanded trim changes using the el...

Re: Boeing's "Battle over blame": reduce power or not?
I feel airspeed is a red herring. They should have reduced thrust to remain within limits because all it would have taken to get control was nose up manual (electric) trim and then flip the cut out switches. Look at the FDR readout (AvHerald has one). The manual (electric) trim worked fine, they eve...

I know it can vary greatly between seasons and contract location, but how many hours per season would be realistic?

I wouldn't care so much that old pilots aren't retiring, except that they simultaneously complain about the failings of everyone younger than them. Ummm...doesn't every generation bitch and moan about older generations when they are young and the younger generations when they are old? Absolutely no...

That article also says it is the third plane crash in a week when it was the fourth - and then goes on to tell you about the other three planes down. Mountain Air Beaver and Taquan Otter midair collision; Taquan Beaver on landing; and now a ?private? Cessna 185.

The aircraft register lists C-GMOV, a 172N, as having its certificate of registration cancelled in 2000 and last owned by Sportair Ltd in Vernon, BC.
Perhaps the registration is supposed to be C-GWOV - a Beech 1900 registered to Wasaya?

Re: 1400 HR CPL With IFR What is my options??
I imagine not being able to travel to the US could affect many domestic operators who send crews to the US for sim training. I would look for operators who do all their training in aircraft or types that have simulators in Canada.

Re: Training Time on a Taildragger?
Prairie College sounds like a good option if they are willing to do some training on the side, their Citabria is $5 less than their 172 per hour (plus instructor at $60/65/hour). They may take you into the mountains and/or do aerobatic instruction as well. I agree with PilotDAR in principal - fly lo...
