Re: Old fuselage on Churchill Lake

The fuselage is a 1929 Travel Air 6000. The registration was CF-ABF and owned by Starratt Airways out of Hudson ONT. On Oct 24, 1935 the aircraft was on a flight from Hudson to Pickle Lake and landed on Churchill Lake after an engine failure. Churchill Lake was known as Lindberg Lake back then. A si...

Re: Sioux Lookout

I started my flying career in CYXL almost 45 years ago. I loved the place. I made some life long friends that I see on my annual visit. There are beautiful waterfront homes and properties and I have considered retiring there.

Re: Winnipeg, St Andrews......Museum?

CF-SAQ was donated to Ed Zaleski's CMFT in White Rock in 1976. I thought it was an undamaged airframe but I could be wrong. The CMFT also had CF-EIM ser # 3. CF-EIM crashed and sank with North Coast Air Service in Prince Rupert in the mid 1980's. There were some changes on the museum scene in the lo...

Re: Winnipeg, St Andrews......Museum?

There are 2 wrecks in outside storage at St. Andrews: CF-BQC, the prototype CF-MAN ser # 9 The complete one is inside a storage hangar at St. Andrews. It is C-GCYV ser # 2. It was previously registered as CF-EIL. The WCAM had another wreck CF-EIR ser # 12. I believe it has gone to the Bush Pilot Mus...

Re: Pump the throttle during start-up

It is almost 35 years since I flew a BN2A Islander. It had the 0-540 engines with carbs but no engine primers. SOP's as I was taught was to pump the throttles 3 or 4 times for a cold start BEFORE TURNING THE ENGINES OVER. It started every time, no problems.

Re: Plane crash injures 2 in Brandon

Years ago I met an elderly chap that flew for Canadian Airways in the 1930's. He told me quite a story which I was able to confirm after finding the official report in the Manitoba Provincial Archives. On May 22, 1937 he was flying a Fairchild 71 CF-AMV on a freight run from Lac Dubonet MB to Macken...

Re: Mid 1960's Beech 18 Accident

I have found a DOT file on CF-NUC. It is not an accident report. It says that the aircraft crashed 34 miles east of Pickle Lake on June 20, 1966 and was abandoned. In a previous post I mentioned that I was told that the accident happened near Achapi Lake. A 34 mile arc puts the location somewhere SE...

Re: Mid 1960's Beech 18 Accident

Hi Beech 18, Thanks for your input and interest. I have enjoyed your posts. I called the company Hooker Bros because it was owned by brothers Dave and Horace Hooker. They were free traders doing fur trading, wild rice, fish packing, fuel oil sales, some charter flying, etc. They changed the name to ...

Mid 1960's Beech 18 Accident

Would any of the old timers out there have info on the following non-fatal accident:

Beech 18 on floats, CF-NUC, at Achapi Lake se of Pickle Lake. Date unknown but probably mid 1960's.
Owner was Hooker Bros, pilot was Jimmy Hoglander.

Thanks,
AP

Re: Payload C 180

My 1961 Cessna 180 has an empty weight of 1986 on floats. I have the original back seat, too many radios, and Monarch long range tanks. With full mains of 52 Imp gals and after I get in my payload is 264 pounds. I weigh 180 pounds. If I fill up completely it holds 82 Imp gals or 590 pounds of fuel. ...

Re: Frank Flores crash Watson Lake area 50 yrs ago

Yes the movie was awful. Don't waste your time. Somewhere in the book possibly on the inside or outside of the back cover is a photo of 2 gents carrying Helen Klaben which was probably taken at Watson Lake. The slim fellow is Gordon Toole. The other chap is wearing glasses and I don't know who that ...

Re: Frank Flores crash Watson Lake area 50 yrs ago

I too used to fly in northern BC in the early 1970's and flew over the Howard DGA15P crash site several times. It was about 60 miles SE of Watson Lake just a mile or so east of Airplane Lake. I thought it was Ralph Flores not Frank but I could be wrong. Anyways the son of Mr. Flores salvaged the wre...

Re: Aircraft import from the USA

I completed the paperwork for the FAA license in late 2012 and met with the FAA in Fargo ND in early Jan 2013. I received the plastic license about a month ago. It say CPL on it. Thanks for the help guys. I had delusions about buying a classic airplane down south and leaving it here.

Re: Aircraft import from the USA

I have been reading the posts on this subject and would appreciate some clarification. I have a FAA CPL issued on the strength of my Canadian CPL. Of course it is not valid for hire or compensation. I am a Canadian citizen. Can I purchase a FAA registered aircraft in the USA and fly it for pleasure ...

The original cockpit crew for the Gimli incident were long retired when the B767 was ferried to the desert. They were however on board for the ferry flight.

Re: Norseman Ski

Thanks HS, that helps a lot. So it is probable that the MC pedestals were placed on Elliot boards. In my bush flying days 40+ odd years ago I saw lots of Norsemans on the pedestal skis and 1 on wheel skis. On a separate subject I also worked with Beech 18's on Bristol wheel skis and straight skis (g...

Re: Norseman Ski

Does anyone know if the Elliot Bros. Skis made in Sioux Lookout had a pneumatic pedestal similar to the M&C ski or were they just straight boards?
