Re: COPA Board BREAKS THE LAW

Similar crap is happening at a large flying club in Southern Alberta (I just heard today), and also at a large flying club in BC. It seems that whenever you get a lot of pilots together, they just end up stabbing each other in the back. All I want to do is fly a plane and maybe socialise with other ...

Re: Pet Peeves

Ok, I think you're talking about the Common Frequency Areas. It looks like they've just split up the airspace around Toronto and instead of calling on 126.7 you're meant to use one of 3 different frequencies. I think that's just something they have in Toronto - I haven't seen that anywhere else. A "...

Re: Pet Peeves

The back of the Calgary VTA is the Edmonton VTA :)

Maybe for Toronto they list the practice frequencies, but they don't seem to do it for Calgary (unless I've missed something, which is certainly possible).

Re: Pet Peeves

The problem is that the frequencies for the practice areas aren't listed on the charts. I just checked my Calgary VNC and VTA to make sure I'm not being an idiot, and I can confirm that nowhere is the frequency listed for the Arkayla Springs practice area. I also just had a look in the CFS and I can...

On the downside I guess I really do suck  No, not really - the same thing happens to us all if we haven't been flying for a few years. It just takes a while to train the monkey to make the correct movements again :) From reading your post I think maybe you're just flaring too much, because n...

Re: C-172M W+B (seriously) *long read

Empty wt =1457.6lbs. MOMENT (Lb.•in)/1000= 38.3 Yes, there's your problem. The ARM on a 172 is about 38.3in, but the MOMENT ARM will be 38.3*1457.6/1000. Check where you got that 38.3 value from and you'll see that the units are probably inches. If you're getting it from the w+b sheet, bear in mind...

Re: C-172M W+B (seriously) *long read

As someone else pointed out, the figures you give for the empty weight and c of g seem perfectly normal...I think your calculation must be off somewhere. One thing to check: did you definitely use the moment-arm for the empty weight rather than the arm? If you entered 38.3 instead of 55.8 you would ...

Re: C-172M W+B (seriously) *long read

I think I know what you did (because I did the same thing recently). If you look at the envelope for the C172M you'll see that the horizontal axis is "MOMENT/1000 lb-in". The most forward C of G is shown as 52, which is 52000 lb-in, NOT 52in! Don't feel bad - I did exactly the same thing a while ago...

Probably she just wanted to show the instruments in the video. I'm sure it took a lot longer getting the 150 up to 14,000 feet than it did coming down :)

C-GKEI, a 1957 Cessna 182A. It will have bladders (unless he changed them), and they can trap water.

Anyway you'll need to take it off if you are thinking about diving back down there to help other people whose life-jackets have snagged on things or inflated inside the wreck. Only if you've inflated it, but if there are still people that need rescued I imagine you wouldn't inflate it just yet. I d...

Re: Checklists

I have a dumb question. Most people here drive a car. Do you have a checklist for operating a car? Well cars don't have mixture controls, carb heat, primers and other things that will cause the engine to stop (and even if the engine does stop, it's not a big deal in a car). To find my way out of th...

There was a glider pilot who got the full armed response treatment plus being held in jail plus being interrogated when he diverted to an airport because the unicom operator told him the cops wanted to talk with him. He was thermaling near an unmarked nuclear plant in unrestricted airspace. Me, I'd...

Re: Setting up to Contract

It really depends what you're planning on doing. As pie says, you can either be a sole proprietor or set up a corporation. Sole trader is much simpler, but a corporation provides some protection against people suing you personally, and potentially some tax advantages. It also looks a lot more profes...

Re: DC-3 "Crash" Yellowknife

Surely there is a difference between:

[1] two pilots in a king air both forgetting to do multiple pre-landing checks, and landing gear up

and:

[2] a pilot making a conscious decision to fly to another airport on one engine due to concerns about landing on a snow-covered runway with one engine
