Re: PT6-11
I think that most aircraft that were originally fitted with -20 or prior model engines now have STCs available (from a variety of people, not the OEM or the engine manufacturer) to fit either a -27 or a -34 in place of the original engine. The -20 and predecessor engines were among the very first en...

Re: Emission control devices on aircraft?
Since aircraft are some of the worse vehicle polluters (only after big ships I believe)... Eh? :?: What substantiation do you have for that statement? I doubt that it is correct. Fuel costs money. Any unburned hydrocarbons that come out of the back end of an aircraft engine represent 100% wasted mo...

Re: 406 ELT Alternatives - GPS Tracking?
I must be missing something here. How does a GPS tracking unit on an aircraft send its position to the outside world? Via satellite relay. It's similar in concept to sending a SMS (text message) by cell phone, except that instead of sending the message out through the cell phone network, the messag...

Re: 406 ELT Alternatives - GPS Tracking?
Is there an alternative to installing the 406 ELT in our light aircraft such as installing a GPS Tracking unit... If everything in the aircraft continues to work properly up to the moment of impact (or forced landing), sure, a GPS tracking unit would likely provide pretty much the same functionalit...

You hit the nail right on the head. That's the only approach that will work on a large scale.
Moderators can deal with the occasional problem participant (usually by PM), but in the big scheme of things, it has to be self-control.

Re: Anonymity
Regarding whistleblowing, and the need to create another identity to do it - isn't it time we stopped living in fear? Is it so wrong to stand up for what is right, and to support others for doing so? Hi Kirsten: Well, the whole topic of 'whistleblowing' is a subject unto itself, and I would not wan...

Snoopy: There is a "third way" down the middle between absolute anonymity and outright disclosure. I have been encouraging this for about 5 years now on a very large and very active Volkswagen discussion forum that I moderate, and it works very well. It addresses and substantially solves the problem...

Re: Dornier Seastar
About $5.5 million per copy. I sincerely wish Dornier success with this venture, but I'm a little worried that they might have difficulty finding a market for this aircraft other than single unit sales to high net worth recreational owners. I saw this aircraft on display at NBAA last fall. It certa...

Re: Question for high arctic Twin Otter dudes
So to summarize, there is more than one size for the main gear. They are:11X12,15X12, Borek STC (unknown size but bigger than 15X12), and First Air STC (similar to Borek but slightly different). As for the nose gear there appears to be a selection of the standard small gear and 11X12. Or is the 15X...

Re: Question for high arctic Twin Otter dudes
Ah, that would explain it then (the STC). Thanks for that information. Below is a photo I took some years ago showing an aircraft with standard main wheels and a IFG specification nosewheel. I think it compares with the upper of the two Borek photos. This aircraft was based in Kenya, and would have ...

ETTW: I'll bet you a cup of coffee that the main wheels in the upper photo of the Borek aircraft are standard (Goodyear) rims fitted with standard landplane gear. I'm not sure enough that I would bet the rent money :D , but I will stick my neck out for a coffee. I've seen that hybrid configuration (...

Re: Question for high arctic Twin Otter dudes
I can't blame you for being confused - there is a lot of confusion in the industry about what wheel and tire sizes are available for the Twin Otter. The AFM only provides one supplement for larger tires, and that addresses the use of 15 inch mainwheel tires on standard 12 inch mainwheel rims. In thi...

Re: Question for high arctic Twin Otter dudes
Lostinthebattle: Uh, I think there is a bit of confusion with the two photos above. The top photo (larger photo) appears to be an aircraft with standard 11.00 x 12 wheels (rims) on all three positions, and the wheel (rim) on the nose position has been fitted with a tire that is approximately the sam...

Does anyone here know about any modification/replacement for the seat in the beaver? Re: PT6 Missile Strike
No, there was no fire. By the time I turned my head to look, the propeller had feathered and stopped turning... this because all the oil was lost when the missile exploded. The fire bell rang, but that was because the wires in the detection loop had been damaged and the electrical circuit closed. Th...
