Re: Prepared? Lifejackets.
http://www.mustangsurvival.com/recreational/inflatable-pfds?country=23 (make sure you get a manual one). The problem is that these don't meet the regs, so you still need the other ones in the plane to be compliant. I've got my eyes on the one my float instructor used, it does meet TSO-C13f, so its ...

Re: ~ Why flying in IMC without instruments is deadly
I finished my ppl in March and began my float training on the plane I bought in Muskoka shortly afterwards. On one of the training flights, for a variety of reasons the planned flight got scrubbed, later in the evening my instructor asked me if I wanted to go for a night flight. I jumped at the oppo...

Re: Prepared? Lifejackets.
Wow, I cannot imagine how terrifying that experience was! Prior to your accident I was guilty of keeping my lifejacket close, but it wasn't on, even when flying with an instructor doing water work and he had his on. After hearing about your accident, myself and everyone in the plane has their lifeja...

Re: Lake Renegade Crash
I'm not sure about the Renegade, the Buc has two trim tabs....but that trim tab seems awfully high. In the 200 the trim is set based on weight and balance.....if you have a more aft load then you need less trim. But even in the most fore loading my tabs never look like that. No question the flaps ar...

Re: Lake Renegade Crash
Hi Pelmet, there is no question that the Lakes have had a horrible year this year, not sure whats going on. I bought my Lake buccaneer in January of this year, after talking extensively to Jim and others, and before I finished my ppl. Once I was done my ppl I took the 25hour course from Lake Central...

Re: Lake St. John accident
Welcome Back Jim!!! So good to hear from you. There is no question that being in a hospital and the road to recovery is a tough go. Just take one day at a time and it will get better day by day. I'm sure between the lot of us we all have contacts that can help out. Just let us know what you need. I'...

Re: Lake Buccaneer LA 4 200
Ok, I've got a little more time now and can try and answer your questions. The Lake Buccaneer and Renegade are very different planes when you actually see them up close. The Renegade is 1.5 times the size of the Buc and at least twice the purchase price. When I was in the market last year all of the...

Re: Flight Tracking App
Lately I've been using the app to measure take off distances and landing distances, off land, grass and water. Keeping in mind different loading and different conditions you get to build a good mental reference list of what the plane can do. But I totally agree it seems silly to have foreflight runn...

Re: Flight Tracking App
I've used Clod ahoy since last September ( over 100hrs) and love it. It's only gotten better with updates. It provides way more info then tracking with ForeFlight, doesn't kill your phone battery and let's you analyze every aspect of your flight at home. There is no question in my mind that being ab...

Re: Lake Buccaneer LA 4 200
Hi Andreas, where about are you located? I'm in the Toronto area and just went through the purchase and 25hr training course. If you pm me some contact info I'm happy to talk you through my journey. I love the plane but you have to take the Lake course and not just a float endorsement, to be safe. B...

Re: ~ Is Foreflite worth it ? Navigation Questions
I used paper while doing my ppl, but also started playing with ForeFlight. Since my flight test I haven't looked at a paper map, still in my flight bag tho. It's worth it just for an updated CFS every 56 days! I think being able to import all of the documents into ForeFlight is the best part. I can'...

Re: Lake St. John accident
Yup, as a new pilot and new to amphibious planes Jim and I talked for hours before I bought my Lake. This weekend while flying up to the cottage everyone who got in the plane for a ride, including me, had a life vest on and a full briefing on what can happen. To me that is that value of this forum. ...

Re: Lake St. John accident
Cador is out. Narrative: TSB Report#A17O0149: a privately operated Lake LA-4-200 amphibious aircraft, was practising touch and go water landings on Lake St John near Orillia, ON (CNJ4) with a pilot and an instructor on board. During one of the manoeuvers, the aircraft collided with the surface of th...

Re: Regulations around water landings
Just heard back from Ontario Parks. There is a regulation around provincial parks, ( go figure) that lists the park, the restrictions and what lakes are affected. Here is the reg: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/070346

If I remember correctly Steve, ( flight chops) did an episode flying with a club out in BC that was made up of Cubs. Contacting Steve through his YouTube channel or contacting the BC club might yield the fastest results. If you can't find the club let me know, it was featured in one of his episodes....

Regulations around water landings
Question about water operation regulations..... As a new pilot and new to floats I have been surprised at how there is not a comprehensive list of restricted waters. In my hunt I have found the, "Historic Canel Regulations act SOR/93-220," which was fantastic. That prompted me to look closely at the...

Re: Buying a plane for training
If you are looking at planes in the U.S. there are some differences in inspection requirements that I didn't realize. I don't think in the U.S. it is required to have a constant speed prop checked every 10yrs. I'm not sure what the other differences are but I know the requirements are not the same. ...

Re: Buying a plane for training
Ok, Thanks everyone that is really helpful. Thanks Laura, that makes sense; I guess the lesson is that if you ever unintentionally spin a plane not certified for spins that you may have to hold the inputs longer and the recovery may be a lot slower. Excellent info to have in my quiver. Kyle The oth...

Re: Buying a plane for training
Why are spins prohibited in some airplanes? I think most airplanes are recoverable from a spin with the same technique ( rudder opposite, elevator down) but they are not all spin rated ( I would hope that they would have to be recoverable in order to be certified) . Spinning is a low g manoeuvre sin...
